Matt Cassel Release? Chiefs Expected To Ditch QB

Is Matt Cassel going to get released? The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to release their quarterback before the 2013 season.

According to USA Today, Cassel is “destined to be released soon.”

Cassel has been with the Chiefs since 2009 but he was benched by the team last year after a poor start. The Chiefs QB went just 1-7 during the 2012 season and had a quarterback rating of just 66.7.

But that isn’t the only reason that the Chiefs are planning to release Cassel. According to CBS, the quarterback is set to make $7.5 million in 2013 and new coach Andy Reid isn’t convinced that Cassel is worth the money.

The Chiefs replaced Cassel last year with Brady Quin but the former Notre Dame Quarterback isn’t expected to resign with KC. So if Cassel is released, the Chiefs will have to go on the hunt for a new QB.

Bleacher Reports notes that the Chiefs have been talking to the Eagles about acquiring Nick Foles. It’s also possible that the team may try to scoop up Alex Smith from the 49ers. The Chiefs will also have the No. 1 draft pick but it isn’t likely that the team will risk the pick on an unproven rookie.

Do you think Matt Cassel is destined to be released?
