Lena Dunham Addresses N-Word Controversy
Lisa Lampanelli caused a storm of controversy when she called Girls creator Lena Dunham her “n***er” on Twitter. Lampanelli has since sounded off on the controversy, and now Dunham has as well.
On Monday, Lampanelli came under fire for using the n-word with a picture of herself alongside the Girls star on her Twitter account. With the image, Lampanelli wrote: Me with my n**ga @LenaDunham of @HBOGirls – I love this beyotch (sic)!!”
Dunham has been silent as the controversy plods along, but chose to address the situation on Friday since the furor has failed to die down. On her own Twitter account Friday, Dunham clarified that she was not pleased with Lampanelli’s words.
Dunham’s silence was criticized by writer Shayla Pierce, who wrote that Dunham’s failure to respond on the matter spoke volumes about her stance on Lampanelli’s use of the derogatory racial slur.
“That’s not a word I would EVER use. Its implications are beyond my comprehension. I was made supremely uncomfortable by it.
“140 characters will never be enough for the kind of dialogue that will actually help us address issues of race and class.”
Dunham also added: “I’m sorry that any of those feelings were evoked for you, especially by a sentence with my name in it.”
Strangely, her tweets on the matter have apparently been deleted, possibly because she got criticized for her response. A recent tweet possibly related to Lampanelli’s use of the n-word reads:
My personal criteria for engaging twitter debate: I wait until something just sits so wrong in my belly bones that I must finally speak.
