Reeva Steenkamp’s Mother Speaks Out, Asks Oscar Pistorius ‘Why?’
Reeva Steenkamp’s mother spoke out the day before her daughter’s funeral, venting her grief and frustration over Reeva’s death.
The model and actress was allegedly murdered by South African runner Oscar Pistorius on Valentine’s Day.
June Steenkamp was interviewed by telephone on Sunday by the Times of Johannesburg in the first comments she has made since Reeva was killed last week.
NBC News notes that Steenkamp’s mother asked:
“Why? Why my little girl? Why did this happen? Why did he do this? What for?”
Pistorious will be formally charged with his girlfriend’s murder during a court appearance on Tuesday. He has been in custody since the shooting happened early Thursday morning. The Olympic “blade runner” has strongly denied the allegations that he murdered Steenkamp.
The model’s mother spoke about her love for her daughter and hos much she misses her. June recalled:
“She loved like no one else could love. She had so much of herself to give and now all of it is gone. Just like that, she is gone …the most beautiful person who ever lived is no longer here.”
Initial reports say that Pistorious claimed he opened fire after being woken by a noise in the early morning hours. He claimed he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder. The police and prosecutors disagree. They intend to upgrade the charge against the Paralympic runner to premeditated murder.
And for the killed model’s family, June said:
“All we have is this horrendous death to deal with … to get to grips with. All we want are answers … answers to why this had to happen, why our beautiful daughter had to die like this.”
Reeva Steenkamp’s funeral will take place on the same day as Oscar Pistorius appears in court for his next hearing regarding her murder. His lawyers are expected to ask for bail.
