Fresno, CA – Kai, a hitchhiking surfer, used a hatchet to stop a “crazed” man threatening three people. The video interview with the “surfer dude” went viral, prompting a search to identify the homeless hero. The alleged attacker ranted that he was Jesus when he approached the group.
During the high-energy interview, Kia the surfer explained in great detail how the attack went down. The man reportedly behaved in a racist manner when he attacked a utility worker. After attacking the California man, he then allegedly threatened two nearby women, 93X notes.
Surfer dude Kai grabs his hatchet and comes to the rescue of the shocked women. The “smash, smash, SMASH,” Kai uttered during the interview when describing what he did with the hatchet, sky-rocketed him to online fame. Video from the hatchet attack interview had garnered more than one million people in about 24 hours.
The alleged “crazed” driver, Jett Simmons McBride, 54, was ultimately caught by Fresno police officers. McBride is more than 6-feet-tall and weighs about 300 pounds, the Daily Mail reports. The unnamed utility worker suffered two broken legs in the attack but is reportedly in good condition.
An excerpt from surfer dude Kai’s interview reads:
“The driver’s like, ‘You know what? I’ve come to realize I’m Jesus Christ and I can do anything. I f*****g want to and, watch this!’ And then drove his Oldsmobile straight into a Pacific Gas and Electric worker who was Africa American. These two women were trying to help him, and this guy runs up and tries to grab one of them, man. A guy that big can snap a woman’s neck like a pencil stick.”
The two female bystanders credit Kai and his hatchet with saving their lives. The surfer noted he was from West Virginia but declined to give his last name during the interview. The surfer actually rejects the homeless term and prefers to think of himself as “homefree.” Kai has downplayed his hero status and referred to the hatchet attack as the “biggest wave” he had ever ridden in his life.
