Salt Lake City, UT – An airport driver was reportedly injured after his truck crashed into a cargo plane at the Salt Lake City International Airport.
Officials said the man driving the airport truck collided with the wing of the cargo plane at around 6:20 pm on Sunday. According to The Salt Lake Tribune , the driver was hospitalized after the wing of the plane crashed through his windshield.
The accident also ruptured a container located on the plane’s wing. This caused quite a bit of fuel to spray onto the tarmac. The Salt Lake City Fire Department hazardous materials team was called out to the scene to clean up the mess.
The Desert News reports that both vehicles were damaged during the crash. Salt Lake City International Airport representative Barbara Gann explained that the cargo plane and the truck were “significantly” damaged during the collision.
The driver was taken to Intermountain Medical Center for treatment. The airport representative explained that his condition was unknown as of Sunday evening.
Although a heavy fog had descended upon Salt Lake City on Sunday afternoon, airport officials do not believe this played a part in the crash.
Last month, US Environmental Protection Agency announced that Salt Lake City had the worst air than any other city in the country. According to USA Today , an icy fog had essentially camped out over the area. In the process, all of the pollutants became trapped in the city.
Salt Lake City pediatrician Ellie Brownstein said:
“”If you can see it, you don’t want to breathe it. Think about what’s going into your body. It’s essentially like smoking. Instead of breathing clean air, you’re breathing particles that make it harder for your lungs to function and get oxygen.”
Authorities are currently investigating what caused an airport truck to collide with a cargo plane at the Salt Lake City International airport.
