Some parents were shocked to find that 50 Shades Of Grey was playing near SpongeBob SquarePants at a Concord, California, drive-in. The West Wind Solano Drive-In had two screens, one facing north, while the other was facing west. One of the screens played the family-friendly SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out Of Water, while the other played the risqué new film, 50 Shades Of Grey .
Deborah Powell of Vallejo, California, took her kids to that exact drive-in on Sunday night . She was shocked to see and hear 50 Shades playing just a few feet away.
“We had no choice but to go straight head on to 50 Shades of Grey in the background. Well, in the front. At the time, there was a woman being slapped, naked, bound up. So we had to have our children close their eyes. I could see another car behind us that had children in there with their eyes closed.”
Powell added that a drive-in employee apologized and admitted there were complaints from other parents. Syufy Enterprises, the company that runs the West Wind Solano Drive-In, has not responded to the numerous complaints, CBS San Francisco reports.
Parents who brought their kids to SpongeBob said that their young kids were focused on the movie, but teens couldn’t help but become distracted by 50 Shades of Grey playing in the background. It caused some of them to giggle uncontrollably.
“It was weird to see these kids all around though walking to and from the concession stands with the huge butt-naked scenes on the next screen. There was no way to avoid it, really.”
This isn’t the only drive-in movie theater that’s causing controversy for playing 50 Shades . A Sacramento drive-in movie theater played the film next to the ironically named Highway 50 . That means some drivers could clearly see 50 Shades of Grey , whether they wanted to or not. The West Wind Sacramento 6 Drive-In is also playing the movie near the new SpongeBob movie.
On Monday, the MetroLux 14 theater in Denver, Colorado, accidentally played 50 Shades of Grey in a theater that was scheduled to show SpongeBob . Joe Jaramillo told the Denver Post , “People ran out of there. You could hear little kids going, ‘SpongeBob! SpongeBob!’ as the parents were dragging them out.”
The movie theater quickly removed the movie from the screen. A spokesperson for the theater says that the 50 Shades mistake was caused by a chip problem in the server.

This isn’t the only strange news to come out of the 50 Shades of Grey premiere weekend. A female moviegoer was arrested after pleasuring herself inside a Mexico movie cinema, according to a report on the Inquisitr . The 33-year-old was found guilty of pleasuring herself in a crowded location and was immediately removed from the theater.
