Rare Lynx Sighting In Colorado Delights Reddit

A rare lynx sighting this month in Colorado has captivated Redditors, and wildlife experts say that the big cats spotted last weekend indeed are a highly unusual sight in the state.

The rare lynx sighting went viral on Reddit in a thread posted this week, and users from the area have added comments suggesting the uncommonly spotted beasts have been seen out an about after efforts to reintroduce them to the region.

User whitewaterfanatic reports:

“I live in the foothills of Colorado and I saw one of these guys in my yard last month. Went out to get something from my car and one was just sitting in the shade besides the back wheel. By the time I noticed, I was about 15 feet from it and couldn’t help but walk away rather quickly after realizing it wasn’t a house cat!”

The Redditor continues:

“It was a lot smaller than these look, so it was probably pretty young, born in the wild after being reintroduced? In any case, I had no idea they were reintroducing them back into the wild. This is great. Lynx are just awesome.”

It was not clear if the animals observed in the rare lynx sighting were the same as those reported as present in the area by the Redditor.

According to local news sources, the lynx sighting follows the extinction of the species in Colorado back in 1970. A program to reintroduce lynx to Colorado was initiated in 1997 but was only declared successful in 2010.

Following the initiative’s declared conclusion, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife agency declared that “benchmarks for successful lynx reintroduction have now been met.”
