Cat Born Without Leg Bones Learns To Walk On His Elbows [Video]
A cat that was born without bones in his legs has learned how to walks on his elbows thanks to the efforts of a UK-based animal charity.
The four-month old kitten named Harvey was born with a rare condition that prevented him from learning how to walk like other young cats. According to The Huffington Post, the kitten lacks the bones that connects the upper portion of his legs to his paws. The condition is called radial agenesis.
The charity said that Harvey was being sold by a cruel individual who put the kitten up for grabs on a site very similar to Craigslist. The cat was eventually purchased and turned over to the UK group Cats Protection. Harvey’s rehabilitation was soon underway.
Foster mom Liz McCulloch told The Sun:
“He’s a lovely little thing. Because Harvey was born that way he doesn’t know there’s anything wrong with him so he runs around on his elbows and happily plays with my other cat and dog.”
In order to correct the problem, the cat has learned to move around and play by using his elbows. The organization explained that Harvey will soon undergo surgery in order to replace the missing bones with metal pins.
McCulloch added that the operation is necessary in order to prevent the kitten from further damage. If the problem isn’t corrected while he’s young, then the cat would suffer spinal injuries later in life.
According to the Daily Mail, the website that featured Harvey’s listing has since apologized for allowing the inhumane individual to sell the cat.
A spokesperson for Gumtree said:
“We have a very strict policy regarding the sale of sick or injured animals on the website. We apologise that someone was able to post an advert for Harvey despite him having medical problems and we will do our best to make sure similar incidents do not occur in the future.”
