Novak Djokovic ripped his shirt off after a grueling 5-hour set against Stanisla Wawrinka during the fourth round of the Australian Open.
Djokovic extended his win streak to 18 at the Australian Open with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 12-10 victory. The match lasted for five hours and ended just short of 2 in the morning.
After winning, an exhausted Djokovic ripped his shirt and then congratulated his opponent on an extremely well played match.
Djokovic said:
“He deserved equally to be a winner of this match … I give him a lot of credit. He has all my respect. He was the aggressive player on the court. I was just hanging in there trying to fight.”
The NZ Herald reports that Wawrinka started to cramp up and needed to get a quick massage before the fifth set.
Wawrinka, who came into the tournament ranked 15th, said:
“It’s by far my best match I ever play, especially in five sets against the No. 1 player … full house. At the end I was really, really close. For sure I’m really sad. … But I think there is more positive than negative.”
