Walmart To Meet With Joe Biden On Gun Control
Walmart officials changed their minds about meeting with Vice President Joe Biden to talk about gun control. Early reports about the Biden get together at the White House discuss gun legislation did not include the mega store.
The retail chain initially noted that they were unavailable to meet with the vice president to discuss gun control due to a scheduling conflict, TheWall Street Journal reports. A representative from the big box retailer contact Vice President on Wednesday to confirm the store will be represented at the Thursday meeting to discuss the responsible sale of firearms, the Economic Times notes.
Walmart spokesman David Tovar had this to say about attending the Joe Biden’s gun control meeting:
“We underestimated the expectation to attend the meeting on Thursday in person, so we are sending an appropriate representative to participate. We have had ongoing conversations with the Obama administration, Congress, New York Mayor Bloomberg’s office, sportsmen groups, suppliers, and others to listen and share our thoughts and experiences.
The Walmart chain is reportedly not only the largest retailer in the world, but the largest gun seller in the United States. Guns and ammunition have been flying off the shelves at stores both big and small in recent weeks. Gun rights advocates concerned that Joe Biden’s gun task force will ban specific weapons or levy a prohibitive tax on the sale of firearms and ammo are largely credited with the record breaking sales.
The gun control debate has captured national headlines since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting massacre in Newtown. Concealed carry permit requests have increased and free gun training for teachers classes have garnered large crowds in multiple states.
Do you think than banning specific guns or requiring more extensive background checks would do anything to deter another mass shooting tragedy?
