Katherine Webb: Alabama QB’s Girlfriend Steals BCS Title Game Spotlight [Video]
Katherine Webb, the reigning Miss Alabama and girlfriend of Tide quarterback AJ McCarron, stole the spotlight during Alabama’s 42-14 rout of Notre Dame during Monday night’s BCS Title game.
With Bama already up 14-0 with just over four minutes left in the first quarter, the cameras turned to Webb, who was spotted in the stands along with McCarron’s mother, Dee Dee Bonner.
While panning to athletes’ wives/girlfriends is certainly not unusual during nationally televised sporting events, things got a bit awkward when ESPN announcer Brent Musberger, 73, made a few questionable comments with analyst Kirk Herbstreit from the television booth about Webb’s beauty.
“Well, I tell you, you quarterbacks, you get all the good-looking women! What a beautiful woman,” marveled Musburger as ESPN’s cameras zoomed in on Webb.
Replied Herbstreit:
“Wow, AJ’s doing some things right down in Tuscaloosa.”
The 73-year-old Musburger continued, interjecting:
“So if you’re a youngster at Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the backyard with pops.”
Following Musburger’s musings, the Twitterverse exploded with posts, with a chorus of critics lambasting the commentator’s comments as both creepy and inappropriate.
Yahoo! Sports columnist Jeff Passan tweeted:
“Sources: A.J. McCarron’s girlfriend to seek restraining order from Brent Musburger at halftime.”
NFL player Donte Stallworth chimed in:
“And now ‘AJ McCarrons’ is trending number one right now… not because of his play but because of his ol lady…. And Brent Musburger”
