The shooting of a Queens teen outside a house party Saturday night in the Rockaways has resulted in two arrests, and a teenage boy and young man have been taken into custody and charged in the murder of 17-year-old Xavier Granville.
The Queens shooting occurred early Sunday (just after midnight), and police initially seemed to have few clues to go on. At the scene, evidence that an AK-47 and pistol were used in the shooting was uncovered, but the large crowd and initial confusion yielded few solid accounts of the deadly crime.
What was first reported about the Queens AK-47 murder was that the incident may have been a spill-over from a club dispute, but how Granville came to be the victim was not disclosed by police.
Police have given scant details about the shooting, or why Granville was gunned down, but NBC reports that two men have been taken into custody in the teen’s murder:
“Dashawn Deverow, 21, and Jamane Yarbrough, 16, both of Far Rockaway, were charged with the murder of 17-year-old Xavier Granville, who was shot early Saturday … Deverow was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon.”
The network reports that during the shooting on Beach 15th Street, the “gunman walked up to partygoers who were outside the home and fired at the crowd.” It is not clear whether Granville explicitly was the target, or whether he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
After the shooting, Granville’s mother Shakira said :
“He was my baby, he was my child … Nobody’s child deserved to get killed like my son got killed.”
Police have not yet disclosed a possible motive in the Queens AK-47 shooting.
