WWE Rumors: WWE Jumping Right Back Into The Attitude Era With Intergender Match On ‘SmackDown’

A lot has changed over the years in the world of professional wrestling, and that isn’t surprising, but WWE does like to be a bit nostalgic every now and then. Vince McMahon’s promotion has brought back the occasional blast from the past, but with how the world is now, things will never be as they once were. Still, it is interesting to note that shades of the WWF Attitude Era may shine through on SmackDown Live this week with the first intergender match in a long time.

There are so many things that have changed in wrestling and hardcore fans can easily tell you what they are. WWE has changed to a PG rating, and that is to be a product all members of the family can enjoy. Wrestling no longer has chairshots to the head or blood or lots of scantily clad women, as times are now different.

With the serious nature and attention rightfully given to domestic abuse, TV shows and movies don’t even like to walk a fine line with that subject anymore. For many decades and a lot during the Attitude Era, there were intergender matches which saw men face off against women, but WWE hasn’t had one in a long time.

Well, that’s all about to change on this week’s SmackDown Live.

According to Wrestling Inc., it is quite possible that Becky Lynch vs. James Ellsworth will take place at Tuesday’s SmackDown Live from Manchester, England. The two have been arguing back and forth for months on Twitter and WWE television, but the payoff doesn’t appear to be Lynch getting a match with Carmella.

While that may happen in the future, it seems an intergender match against Ellsworth is on the table first.

Now, WWE hasn’t yet officially announced the match on their website or anything, but it does seem likely that it will take place.

During the Attitude Era, intergender matches happened quite often, with Chyna even winning the WWF/WWE Intercontinental Title. Aside from that, other female superstars such as Chyna, Trish Stratus, and many others often involved themselves with male superstars which led to physical altercations.

Despite wrestling being scripted, WWE has shied away from intergender matches for a long time, but it seems as if things may have changed.

While this likely won’t become a running trend, it is interesting to hear the rumors of an intergender match happening on SmackDown Live. WWE may not let many of them take place like they often did during the Attitude Era, but this is a change from how they’ve presented their product over the last decade. It will be interesting to see how Becky Lynch vs. James Ellsworth comes across, but this is certainly a flashback to wrestling days of old.
