Reason Why John Cena Will Be A Special Guest Referee At ‘Survivor Series’ Revealed
John Cena is currently on hiatus to film two Hollywood movies and he is scheduled to return at the annual after Christmas live events. However, there have been rumors floating around about Cena possibly being the special guest referee for the Brock Lesnar vs. Jinder Mahal match at Survivor Series. Here’s the reason why Cena will indeed be the special guest referee.
As first confirmed by WWE.com, Universal champion Brock Lesnar will clash with WWE champion Jinder Mahal at Survivor Series as part of the brand war between Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live. Mahal laid down the challenge first and Lesnar accepted with Paul Heyman taking shots at “The Modern Day Maharaja.”
Then rumors of a special guest referee for the match started with John Cena is the favorite. Other names reportedly considered include Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock, but Cena makes the most sense. Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer noted that the WWE will announce Cena’s role as special guest referee for the match before Survivor Series.
Although the WWE has not confirmed their plans for the match, the leaked poster of Survivor Series gave it all away. The leaked poster reveals that Cena is indeed going to be the special guest referee for Lesnar vs. Mahal. It also revealed that Roman Reigns and Finn Balor could be part of Team Raw while AJ styles will be the final member of Team SmackDown.

Meltzer also noted that reason, why Cena will be the special guest referee, is to down Mahal in the match and give Lesnar the victory. The angle will lead to a match at WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans next year for the WWE Championship. Cena vs. Mahal for the WWE Title has been rumored for months now and it has a big possibility of happening unless plans change again.
The WWE already created interest in the match by announcing that Mahal is going to defend the WWE Championship against AJ Styles this coming Tuesday. However, a title change is not expected since the WWE only wants to attract viewers to SmackDown Live after lackluster ratings last week.
However, plans do change in the WWE and people should not be surprised if Styles becomes the WWE champion. But Styles being WWE champion is not part of the report by The Dirty Sheets regarding the plans for Survivor Series. The report noted that the only penciled plan is for Lesnar to defeat Mahal with Monday Night Raw prevailing over SmackDown Live by a score of 3-2.
Nevertheless, fans should tune in this coming Tuesday on SmackDown Live to watch Jinder Mahal defend the WWE Championship against AJ Styles. The WWE could also announce the return of John Cena, who last appeared on television at No Mercy when he lost to Roman Reigns.
