The ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Spinoff Is Coming: Everything We Know So Far About Shonda Rhime’s Latest Project
Shonda Rhimes is creating another show in Shondaland, and this time it is a spin-off of the popular medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. Fans are wanting to know what the title of the new series will be and when it will start, but Rhimes and the ABC network aren’t sharing any secrets yet.
According to Closer Weekly, the show does not have a title, but the first season will feature ten episodes and focus on a Seattle fire department in the same universe as the characters from Grey’s.
It is unclear when the show will premiere, but some sources say it will start mid-season, which means it is coming very soon. Grey’s Anatomy will introduce the new characters before they move to the spin-off, and one doctor from Grey-Sloan Memorial will be going with them.
Jason George, who plays Dr. Ben Warren, confirmed in September that he will be leaving Grey’s and moving to the new series, but it is unclear how his character will fit in and what it means for his marriage to Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson). Romper reported that in the most recent Grey’s episode, Dr. Warren announced that he applied for firefighter training camp, but has yet to tell his wife. Once the new series begins, his character is expected to be back at Grey-Sloan memorial from time to time in cameo appearances.
The network has announced the names of some cast members, including Jaina Lee Ortiz, Grey Damon, Miguel Sandoval, Okieriete Onaodowan, Danielle Savre, Jay Hayden, Barrett Doss, and Alberto Frezza.
This isn’t the first Grey’s Anatomy spin-off attempted by Rhimes. In 2007, Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh), the estranged wife of Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) left Seattle Grace and moved to Los Angeles to star in her own show called Private Practice, which ran until 2013.
For the new spin-off, Rhimes will serve as Executive Producer, and Grey’s writer Stacy McKee will be the showrunner. ABC is sure the show will be a hit, with the President of the network, Channing Dungey, saying that no one can mix the jeopardy faced by a firefighter in the line of duty with their personal lives like Rhimes can.
You can catch hints of the spin-off as Season 13 of Grey’s Anatomy continues Thursday nights on ABC.
