Deceased ‘Civil War’ Villain Spotted On ‘Avengers 4’ Set: Is Crossbones Returning To The MCU?
Filming for Avengers 4 has been underway for sometime now in Atlanta, and some of the film’s extras aren’t shy about sharing secrets. It’s been revealed that Captain America: Civil War villain Crossbones was spotted on the Avengers 4 set.
The extra took to Reddit, where they nonchalantly dropped the spoiler. The thread was originally about set photos of Robert Downey Jr. and the filming of a B.A.R.F. (binarily augmented retro framing) simulation. They then revealed they saw the actor who plays Crossbones, Frank Grillo, on set.
It doesn’t appear that Grillo was in a costume since the extra only described seeing the actor. There was no picture to accompany the claim, so all this speculation is swirling around one extra’s testimony.
After Captain America: The Winter Soldier debuted in 2014, Grillo mentioned to Collider that he had a multi-picture deal with Marvel. He has only appeared in two Marvel films to date, so it’s possible his contract is not over. However, Marvel is known for amending their actors’ contracts, so hopefully, he wasn’t given the boot too soon.
In September, Forbes spoke with Grillo, who dropped a major hint about his Crossbones role.
“I was surprised not too long ago because there is some news that nobody knows yet, to do with my character, that’s going to be really interesting and I’m excited about that.”
Also, an interview with Grillo from October could back up this rumor as well.
The actor spoke with SyFy WIRE during New York Comic Con and smiled as he said, “Hopefully down the road somewhere, Crossbones comes back.”

Crossbones, also known as Brock Rumlow, is a major villain in the Captain America comic books. Rumlow appeared in The Winter Soldier and had transitioned to Crossbones in Civil War. The big-time villain only appeared in the movie’s first sequence, with many fans arguing the character didn’t get the plotline he deserved.
While Crossbones appeared to have been blown up by his own grenade (and a little help from Scarlet Witch) in Civil War, there is never a shot of his body. The camera directed fans attention elsewhere after the grenade went off.
Avengers 4 is set to premiere in 2019.
