Things are going great for actor Chris Sullivan, better known as Toby on the hit NBC drama This Is Us. While Chris plays Toby well, he is getting a little backlash these days from fans who do not support him wearing a prosthetic to make Toby larger than he really is. Recently Chris was able to shed some insight into his thoughts on some fans criticism of the fat suit he sometimes wears while playing Toby.
Us Weekly shared that Chris is not letting the criticism of the fat suit he wears get to him. Sullivan says the people complaining were simply trying to find something wrong with a show that is completely amazing. Chris feels it all stems from some just looking for something to complain about.
“We currently live in a culture where outrage is a bit of a hobby for some people. If they’re not outraged about something, they’re totally bored.”
Sullivan goes on to say it is simply a costume he uses for his character. He said it allows Toby’s weight to fluctuate as the show goes between the different time periods being portrayed. Chris reminds fans that Toby was not always as heavy as he is now. Is this a hint he will venture down this avenue more to get to the bottom of Toby’s weight issues?

When it comes to the fat suit, Chris’ biggest ally is on-screen partner Chrissy Metz, who defended him earlier this year when the news of Sullivan’s prosthetic began to escalate. Metz had shared that while there were larger individuals who auditioned for the role of Toby, Chris was simply the best man for the job. Most fans will agree that Toby is being played exactly as he was meant to by Sullivan.
The cast of This Is Us is making publicity rounds with Season 2 currently going strong, and Chris stopped by Today to talk some more about the whole fat suit critique and also to share a few secrets from the set of This Is Us that most fans probably weren’t aware of. Sullivan says that while he hasn’t been singing on the show, Sterling K. Brown has a magnificent voice. Chris says Sterling has a wonderful baritone.
Chris also shared that before Mandy Moore begins a scene, she does an entire body shake that helps ease her into character. Who would have thought Mandy had a such a unique way to squash her nerves.
As far as co-star Chrissy Metz, Sullivan says they communicate with each other in southern voices when the camera is not rolling. Chris says there is no reason for it all other than them both being a couple of idiots.

While Chris has an amazing connection and bond with Chrissy, he does actually have a real life wife and she is beautiful. Sullivan is married to short-film producer Rachel Reichard. The couple has been married for six years and seeing them on the red carpet together is adorable. They are both quirky characters and not afraid to show it off for fans.
Don’t miss seeing Chris on Tuesday nights on NBC as he plays Toby on This is Us. Fans can also see Sullivan on Season 1 of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things .
