Last night on Monday Night Raw , WWE set up the card for Survivor Series with Team Red going up against Team Blue in a series of matches. The headliner of the pay-per-view will be WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar ( Raw ) vs. WWE Champion Jinder Mahal ( SmackDown Live ), but rumors persist of a special guest referee for that match. As of now, John Cena’s name has come up the most, but two other legends may end up making their return for the spot.
This year, the Survivor Series will once again be Raw vs. SmackDown in a series of “Champion vs. Champion” matches and elimination-style tag bouts. Last week on SmackDown , Jinder Mahal called out Brock Lesnar for a match and it has led to the two men squaring off at the pay-per-view event.
John Cena hasn’t been seen in quite some time, but many wondered if the WWE free agent would be involved at Survivor Series and for which side? According to Wrestling Inc. , Cena is expected to be named as the special guest referee for Lesnar vs. Mahal, but that has not yet been confirmed or made official.
Now, there may be some doubt as to who could actually step in and don the striped shirt.
Rumors of The Undertaker’s return have been swirling since he had his proposed last match at WrestleMania 33 earlier this year. There was even talk that he would show up at TLC this past weekend, but that obviously didn’t happen.
Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez talked about the special guest referee spot at Survivor Series on Wrestling Observer Radio , and they had some interesting comments and ideas. Cena is not confirmed as the ref and other names have been mentioned backstage, and two of those names are The Undertaker and Goldberg.
Alvarez believes that Goldberg or Undertaker would be interesting options since they both have a history with the Survivor Series . Meltzer goes against this, though, and says WWE wants someone in the ring who would work well with Brock Lesnar and both of these superstars have been that route before.
When all was said and done, Meltzer and Alvarez believe John Cena is the best option as the special guest referee. Not only do Cena and Lesnar have history, but it could set up a program between Cena and Mahal for a future feud.
Then again, none of the three superstars may end up as the special guest referee and someone else could step in. Cena is still off filming Transformers while Goldberg and The Undertaker are somewhat retired.
John Cena being the special guest referee is not set in stone for Brock Lesnar vs. Jinder Mahal at Survivor Series , but it does like the most viable option. It makes sense with him being a free agent between Raw and SmackDown while also setting up a program with Mahal later on. The Undertaker and Goldberg are always options, but those are just rumors and suggestions for now and may amount to nothing.
