Real Reason Why Roman Reigns’ IC Title Reign Was Canceled
A couple of weeks ago, Roman Reigns challenged The Miz for the Intercontinental Championship before he was dismantled by Miz, Cesaro, and Sheamus. That attack quickly led to the reunion of The Shield and will culminate in a huge match between “The Hounds of Justice” and The Miz, Braun Strowman, Kane, Cesaro, and Sheamus at WWE TLC this Sunday. That match will be exciting, but it was far from the original plan.
It’s been reported that WWE officials were planning for Roman Reigns to become the IC Champion before WWE TLC. Apparently, Kane’s return to Raw was always part of the plan because he’s required to perform a certain number of shows. The original plan was for Reigns to win the IC Title for a short time and then to lose it back to The Miz as a result of The Big Red Machine’s return. Clearly, those plans have changed a bit.
At the time, WWE officials wanted Reigns to hold the IC Title to make him a “Grand Slam Champion” after Roman defeats Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 34 and becomes the WWE Universal Champion. The WWE Universe should expect Roman Reigns to become the Intercontinental Champion before WrestleMania 34, but there are a couple of reasons why WWE officials made the decision to cancel his brief run with the title.
Ultimately, the powers that be decided that The Shield reunion was necessary to ensure the WWE TLC PPV sells out. More importantly, WWE officials are still trying to get Roman Reigns over as the biggest babyface in the company. The Shield’s reunion should earn Reigns some favor with the fans, but a lot of people were worried about the WWE Universe taking Kane’s side now that he’s returned for retribution against Roman for ending The Undertaker’s career, especially considering how many fans reacted after WrestleMania 33.
A lot of fans remain hopeful and there are still rumors that The Undertaker will return for another match at WWE Survivor Series. It’s unclear how long WWE officials are planning to keep The Shield together. There is a lot of speculation that it will be for the rest of the year, but it seems that Kane vs. Roman Reigns will be at the center of whatever creative plans are coming over the coming months. Until further notice, it doesn’t seem that Reigns will be winning the Intercontinental Championship either unless something big changes.
