RunDisney Confirms Cancellation Of All Half Marathon And Race Events At Disneyland Beginning In 2018
Some of the most popular events at the Disneyland Resort are in danger of being canceled for several years due to a number of construction projects taking place throughout the parks. It is rumored that RunDisney will make an official announcement sometime this week to reveal all races and events for the coming years are going to be canceled, and there is no real timetable for when they will be reinstated.
UPDATE on Oct. 18. 2017 at 3:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, RunDisney officially announced that all half marathon and other race events have been cancelled beginning in 2018. As reported by the OC Register, it is not known when they are going to return or start up again.
“While construction for the next several years will impact our ability to deliver the runDisney experience our guests love, we are excited about our future as the Disneyland Resort continues one of its largest multi-year expansions,” said George Savvas, a Disneyland spokesman. “For fans who love to be part of runDisney events, we will continue to offer races at our other properties around the world in 2018.”
All races at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Paris are going to carry on as scheduled.
The final RunDisney event at Disneyland is scheduled to be the Super Heroes Half Marathon which will take place over the weekend of Nov. 9-12, 2017. There has been no indication of when the next will take place.

It is no real surprise that there is a lot taking place at Disneyland right now with a whole host of major projects. New lands are being built, and refurbishments are being done on some of the resort hotels. There is just a lot taking place and setting up a huge event such as a half marathon could prove troublesome.
This rumor was first reported back in July by Blog Mickey, which stated that the Star Wars – Light Side Half Marathon and Tinker Bell Half Marathon in 2018 were in jeopardy. With the events set to take place in March and June respectively, registration remains closed as November approaches.
Now, WDWNT reports that an official announcement will be coming this week from RunDisney to state that all events in 2018 are canceled. It is also possible that more events in the following years could be put off as well.
If this rumor ends up becoming a reality, it won’t be a huge surprise.
Right now, there are numerous projects taking place at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, but California Disney simply doesn’t have the blessing of size to work around them. Here are just a few of the construction issues that could lead to the RunDisney cancellations.
- Paradise Pier to Pixar Pier – 2018
- Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – 2019
- Marvel land/attractions in DCA – TBD
- Eastern Gateway project with new parking garage – TBD
While the Star Wars – Light Side Half Marathon is scheduled, the official website for RunDisney has messages detailing postponement of the registration.
“UPDATE: Registration for the 2018 Star Wars™ Half Marathon at Disneyland®Resort has been temporarily postponed and will open at a later date. Updated information regarding early and general registration dates to come.”
There are also no further events scheduled after that race, even though the Tinker Bell Half Marathon was set to take place in the summer. The Disneyland Half and Super Heroes (Avengers) Half are not on the schedule at all.
Right now, all races and events at the Disneyland Resort in 2018 and beyond have simply had their registration delayed, but more could be coming. The rumor of all RunDisney events and marathons being canceled due to the construction projects makes a lot of sense, but nothing has been made official as of yet. All that can be done is to wait and see if a concrete announcement is made or if registration is delayed again.
