‘Voltron’ Season 5 Release Date: Netflix’s 2018 ‘Voltron: Legendary Defender’ Less Episodes For Fifth Season

The Voltron Season 5 release date on Netflix has officially been confirmed. The wait for the fifth season feels like forever, especially after the way the final episode hinted at a major alliance with the dark side. In addition to that plot twist, many fans are probably puzzled why the recent Voltron: Legendary Defender season was so short, but it turns out that’s all part of the plan.

Netflix likes setting up fans for binge-watching, but the latest plan is to break up single seasons into smaller chunks so that more episodes seem to come quicker. For example, Little Witch Academia Season 2 was really just a single Japanese anime season split in two, although anime studio Trigger is talking about making a true sequel.

The same thing is happening with Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 5 and probably Season 6. During the Netflix and DreamWorksTV’s Comic-Con 2017 panel in July, Studio Mir dropped the bombshell that the third season composed of 13 episodes was being split up. So, it could be argued that the fourth season was simply the second half of the third season.

“The idea is to get you more Voltron more often. It’s in smaller doses, but you’ll see it more,” executive producer Lauren Montgomery explained during Comic-Con.

Studio Mir director Joaquim Dos Santos says that the new season format was presented to them by Dreamworks executives without Mir getting any input. Dos Santos recalls that they were at first “ready to go to war” against the idea, but then they realized it was better than being like Rick And Morty Season 3 (and 4, for that matter).

“I would love to say we were smart enough to come up with that ourselves,” he said. “But we make the show, we don’t think about necessarily the big overarching roll out strategies. That was something that was presented to us from I think meetings that happen on an executive level that are a little above our pay grade.”

Likewise, Voltron Season 5 and 6 were split up into six and seven episodes like the most recent season. Netflix is probably monitoring feedback from fans, but it seems very likely that audiences should expect a shorter seasons as a rule. The good news is that Voltron Season 6 will follow up relatively quickly.

Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 5 And 6 Release Date

Production company Studio Mir has announced that the Voltron Season 5 release date is set for March 2, 2018. The numbe of episodes for Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 5 was only six episodes, which means Voltron Season 6 will be seven episodes.

What is known for certain is that Studio Mir initially promised 78 episodes for the entire series. Including the three-part opening movie and the episodes from the fourth season, the story is now up to 39 episodes, which is the halfway point. Voltron Season 5 and 6 will add 13 episodes to the count, bringing audiences to episode 52.

Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 6 is scheduled to release on June 15, 2018. The first two seasons were spread out roughly seven months apart, but the third season came out faster due to the shorter season. However, the delay between seasons 5 and 6 was longer. Voltron Season 5 is releasing in March of 2018, but the Voltron Season 6 release date is 15 weeks later.

Voltron Season 6 Predictions (Spoilers)

Voltron Season 4 ended on a big cliffhanger that will need to be resolved in the beginning of Voltron Season 5. It all but seemed certain that Team Voltron would perish in the planet bomb blast, but Prince Lotor came to the rescue and prevented Keith from making his kamikaze suicide run. At the ending, Lotor suggested, “I think it’s time we had a discussion.”

It’s very plausible that Voltron Season 5 will feature Lotor teaming up with Allura, Lance, Shiro, Keith, Hunk, and Pidge. His parents, Zarkon and Hagar, have already declared their son a traitor and Lotor’s generals have deserted him. An uneasy alliance makes sense since neither side has anything to lose.

Or, at least that’s how Lotor is probably going to pitch the alliance. Team Voltron does not realize the prince is scheming to reopen the gate to the alternate universe of infinite Quintessence. He may have constructed a third ship with the ore made from the trans-dimensional comet, but now that the ore is running out Lotor needs an alternate plan.

From the beginning of the story, reclaiming Voltron from the Paladins has been the driving force behind Zarkon’s obsession. It’s possible his son secretly harbors a similar obsession. Besides making more ships, it’s possible Lotor desires to create a Voltron-like robot of his own design. But to pull off this scheme, perhaps Lotor realized he needs access to Voltron itself to enter the portal on the former Galra homeworld?

If Lotor’s motive is creating his own Voltron rival, then Voltron Season 5 would focus on the characters working out their alliance. Lotor could try to form friendships to make the Paladins more at ease. Voltron Season 6 could have the Paladins become suspicious of their new ally. It’s possible the cliffhanger ending will force Prince Lotor to choose between his new teammates or his grand scheme. Audiences will just have to wait until the Voltron Season 5 release date to find out!
