Tom Petty’s Daughter Called Out ‘Rolling Stone’ For Reporting His Death Prematurely [UPDATE]

Singer Tom Petty passed away last night just before midnight east coast time according to his longtime manager, Tony Dimitriades. Petty died surrounded by family, friends, and his Heartbreaker bandmates after being removed from life support earlier in the evening. After suffering a massive heart attack, he had no brain activity.

Tom Petty was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, and at the time of his death had just finished a 40th-anniversary tour with his band, The Heartbreakers.

Celebrity friends and fans of Tom Petty are tweeting this morning their thoughts, prayers, and wishes following his death late last night. Sheryl Crow, Rob Lowe. Peter Gabriel and Carole King tweeted their sorrow. Lin-Manuel Miranda expressed gratitude.

“I am so grateful for Tom Petty’s music. Feels selfish to want more, but I always will. Rest in peace.”

Though there are many media sources prematurely reporting Tom Petty’s death, an Instagram account attributed to Petty’s daughter, Annakim Violette, has reached out to rage at Rolling Stone for claiming that Petty is dead. In her account which is @Dadlivesmatteronelove, Annakim Violette wrote a scathing note to Rolling Stone.

“@rollingstone my dad is not dead yet but your f***ing magazine is ??????your slime???? has been pieces of tabloid dog s**t. You put the worst artists on your covers do zero research. How dare you report that my father has died just to get press because your articles and photos are so dated. I will f***ing s**t down your throat and your family’s. Try not being a trump vibe. This is my father, not a celebrity. An artist and human being.”

She also said that Tom Petty’s band, The Heartbreakers are at the hospital with the family, and for that, she is very grateful.

Reportedly, the LAPD reported that Tom Petty had a heart attack and was found unresponsive. They then claimed that Petty had died, causing people all over the internet to post #RIP Tom Petty.

Billboard Magazine is reporting that Tom Petty was on life support, but has now been taken off.

The LAPD is now backpedaling to say that they cannot confirm Tom Petty’s condition.

“The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertantly [sic] provided to some media sources. However, the LAPD has no investigative role in this matter. We apologize for any inconvenience in this reporting.”

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers just wrapped their 40th-anniversary tour at the Hollywood Bowl last week and Petty was staying at his Malibu home where he was allegedly found unresponsive at approximately 10:52 a.m. First responders were able to get a pulse back, but Petty was said to be in critical condition when Petty arrived at the hospital.

Thomas Earl Petty was born on Oct. 20, 1950 in Gainesville, Florida. He was 66 years old.
