‘Tokyo Ghoul’ Season 3 Details Coming In ‘Young Jump’ Manga? ‘Tokyo Ghoul: re’ Anime Spoilers

The Tokyo Ghoul Season 3 release date has officially been confirmed to be happening in 2018. Tokyo Ghoul: The Movie is coming out in October in the United States, and Tokyo Ghoul: re 143 is setting up the manga ending, and now manga magazine Young Jump says they are planning a major announcement. While no one is certain whether they plan on discussing more details about the new anime project, the announcement will definitely involve Tokyo Ghoul: re in some manner.

The original Tokyo Ghoul story and plot comes from Sui Ishida, who has published 143 chapters of the Tokyo Ghoul: re manga as of this article’s publishing. Tokyo Ghoul: re Volume 13 is scheduled to be released in Japan on October 19, 2017 and Volume 14 has not been announced yet. The plot for the first two seasons of the anime was based on scripts written by Chuji Mikasano at Studio Pierrot, but the final 143rd chapter of the first manga series was released in the same month as the ending of the first season.

Considering that so much source material was available during production, fans were surprised that the anime story started diverging so noticeably. For example, Kaneki never joined the Aogiri Tree ghoul organization in the original story. Some fans have called for a complete reboot of the anime series, but others are hoping Tokyo Ghoul Season 3 will simply pick up with the second manga series.

In addition, Viz Media recently announced that the English translation of Tokyo Ghoul: re will start releasing on October 17, 2017.

“Fans will not want to miss this riveting sequel, with its cast of colorful new characters and familiar favorites in a story that dives further into the lore of Tokyo Ghoul,” said editor Pancha Diaz, according to the press release. “Follow the Qs Squad this fall as they take on the lethal and often unpredictable attributes of the Ghouls they are charged with hunting!”

Tokyo Ghoul Season 3 Or A Third Manga Series?

According to Manga Mag Japon, Young Jump magazine plans on making a big announcement on October 12, 2017. There will be a full-color page and, similar to how My Hero Academia Season 3 was first confirmed through manga magazines, it is possible the third season of the Tokyo Ghoul anime will be discussed further now that the announcement trailer has already launched.

However, that’s just one possibility. Anyone following the manga knows that the second series is probably ending somewhere around Tokyo Ghoul: re 143. The first manga series also ended with Chapter 143, so it is possible that Young Jump will be announcing the ending of the manga series.

But simply announcing a final end to the story would seem like something of a letdown for a major announcement that’s being scheduled in advance. Besides Tokyo Ghoul Season 3, it is possible the manga itself will be receiving a third series. Since the first series was essentially a tragedy about Ken Kaneki, and the second series was about redemption, some fans hope a third manga series would focus on Touka Kirishima, her child, and the next generation of ghouls as the main protagonists.

Tokyo Ghoul Season 3 Anime Spoilers

In the anime, the sign at Touka Kirishima’s new shop referenced Tokyo Ghoul: Re, but did not provide the full ending of the manga. During the ending scene of the second season, Ken Kaneki slowly carried his friend Hide’s body past the staring eyes of the CCG forces (Commission of Counter Ghoul). When Kishou Arima confronted him, the battle in the snow is heavily implied instead of shown. The manga version specifically has Arima lunging with his sword-like quinque to stab Kaneki all the way through his skull, piercing his eye. Even then, Kaneki still fights back, managing to damage the CCG Reaper’s quinque, a result which surprised Arima.

Regardless, Kaneki was stabbed through the body and the head once again, and it seems certain he met his demise. Kaneki’s profile with the CCG is crossed out and marked as “erased.” The epilogue of the manga went a bit further by showing how first-class investigator Akira Mado would be leading a new special team called the Quinx Squad. She has been given the responsibility of training a new character named Haise Sasaki who is part of the squad.

Without getting into major spoilers, the story of Tokyo Ghoul Season 3 will focus on the new protagonist Sasaki and the legacy of Kaneki. The Quinx Squad are normal humans who have undergone a surgical procedure where the quinque of a ghoul is implanted in their bodies. Although these people are not ghouls themselves, they often suffer prejudice and discrimination from other investigators in the CCG.

Sasaki will eventually earn the nickname of the Black Reaper by the ghouls, but the ghouls have their own plan to create a world where both humans and ghouls can live together peacefully. Will the One-Eyed King and his organization called Goat win the battle? Anime fans will just have to wait impatiently for the Tokyo Ghoul Season 3 release date to watch what happens next.
