New Samsung Galaxy Grand, Note 3, And S4 ‘Phablets’
The new Samsung Galaxy will include a diverse lineup attached to the “Galaxy” brand name. The newest addition to the Samsung Galaxy will be the Samsung Galaxy Grand, which is being offered as a mid-range alternative to the popular Samsung Galaxy S and Note series.
The latest rage in the smartphone sector is the “phablet,” which is a hybrid merging the gap between the typical smartphone and tablet. The Samsung Galaxy Grand will be similar in design to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, which is priced at $300 combined with a new contract, but the Grand will shoot for the mid-range price of $100 to $150.
The smaller price of course comes with mid-range specifications. The Samsung Galaxy Grand has a 5-inch screen that is larger than the Samsung Galaxy S3 but is smaller than the Samsung Galaxy Note. The technical trade off is that the screen resolution is not HD. The WVGA specification is 800×600, which pales in comparison to the other two smartphone’s 1280×720 HD resolution which meets the 720p requirement. 1080p level screens are usually reserved for tablets where the extra clarity is noticeable to the human eye.
The processor is also not as powerful, with the Samsung Galaxy Grand featuring a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. The Grand also does not get the S Pen stylus. The good news is that the Grand runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, packs in an 8-megapixel rear camera, and provides 8 GB of storage, which can be expanded with a microSD card.
International Digital Times highlights one feature of the Samsung Galaxy Grand that none of the other smartphones have:
“[T]he new Samsung Galaxy Grand could be an attractive option for someone who travels a lot, as the new Samsung Galaxy Grand sports dual-SIM card support, which allows you to use two phone numbers from the same card. Users of the new Samsung Galaxy Grand could put a foreign SIM card in their phone alongside their normal, allowing them to use the same phone outside of the U.S., something that is more difficult for Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy Note users.”
The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is rumored to be growing bigger according to TellMeNews, with Samsung releasing its third-generation phablet with a 6.3-inch OLED HD display. Not much is known about the Samsung Galaxy S4, not even an accurate release date, although the smartphone is rumored to feature a 4.99-inch full HD (1080p) Super AMOLED screen, a quad-core Cortex-A15 processor, and 13Mp camera.
