Universal Pictures To Release Vin Diesel’s ‘Riddick’ Next Year
Universal Pictures is all set to release director David Twohy’s sci-fi action flick Riddick into theaters next year, according to Deadline.
The film is the long-awaited sequel to Twohy’s 2004 flick The Chronicles of Riddick which stars Vin Diesel as the bald interplanetary hero who doesn’t always have his companions’ best interest at heart.
Although the movie was followed up in 2004 by the animated feature The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury, this will be the first time Diesel has portrayed the character on-screen in over nine years.
Bloody Disgusting reports the R-rated cinematic adventure will find its way into theaters across the US on September 6, 2013. Given the sheer number of high-profile projects looming on the horizon, 2013 is shaping up to be an interesting year at the movies.
The film’s plot has been officially described as follows:
“Vin Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy. The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.
“The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.”
Riddick’s cinematic adventures began with David Twohy’s 2000 creature feature Pitch Black, which finds the character stranded on a hostile planet filled with monsters that only attack at night.
Vin Diesel is going to be a very busy guy in the coming months. Not only is he putting together sequels to Fast and the Furious and xXx, the actor has signed on to portrayed the legendary bald detective Kojak in an upcoming feature.
