Like it or not, the new trailer for director Raja Gosnell’s forthcoming sequel Smurfs 2 has found its way onto the internet.
The latest promotional clip for the follow-up gives fans of the series a chance to see the Naughties in action. According to Yahoo! News , the trouble-making grey-skinned Smurfs are voiced by Christina Ricci and JB Smooth.
According to the website, the Naughties are a simpler, more digestible version of the nightmarish Black Smurfs. In short, Smurfs would suddenly become mindlessly villains after being bitten by a peculiar fly. The bizarre affliction would spread when a Smurf bit one of its companion’s tails.
Since this scenario seems a little disturbed for modern sensibilities, the filmmakers have opted to craft the Naughties. Although they’re still evil, the pair aren’t nearly as sinister as their cartoon counterparts.
Internet Movie Database describes the film’s plot as follows:
“The Smurfs team up with their human friends to rescue Smurfette, who has been kidnapped by Gargamel since she knows a secret spell that can turn the evil sorcerer’s newest creation – creatures called the Naughties – into real Smurfs.”
Did you hate the first big screen adaptation of The Smurfs ? Are you curious as to why anyone would bother crafting a sequel? The answer to you inquiry is simple: lots and lots of money.
Box Office Mojo reports that Raja Gosnell’s 2011 effort raked in an impressive amount of scratch in the United States. When its theatrical run was finished, the film had collected a cool $142 million. Worldwide, the movie earned an impressive $563 million. In this instance, a sequel was practically inevitable.
In addition to Ricci and Smooth, the sequel will feature Neil Patrick Harris, Sofia Vergara, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Alan Cumming, Katy Perry, Fred Armisen, and Hank Azaria as the villainous Gargamel.
