Spice Girls Musical ‘Viva Forever’ Set To Open In London
The Spice Girls are set to open their musical Viva Forever in London on Tuesday (December 11), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), and Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice) will all star in the upcoming stage production. Written by Jennifer Saunders and produced by Judy Craymer (Mamma Mia!), Viva Forever features quite a few numbers powered by the music of the Spice Girls.
The Associated Press describes the production as follows:
“[The musical is] a tale of four friends whose bond becomes strained when their band enters a TV talent show. It’s a pop confection with heavyweight credentials.”
During her recent interview with the Daily Mirror, Absolutely Fabulous alum Jennifer Saunders said felt compelled to write the musical since having someone else tackle the project was simply “not acceptable.”
This is what Saunders had this to say about her involvement with Viva Forever:
“I was basically the sixth member of the band. We used to travel around everywhere to see them and they were so great with my kids. My first thought was that I really, really had to do it. The thought of a Spice Girls musical written by somebody else was not acceptable. Because I was so close to them, I couldn’t let it slip through my fingers.”
Saunders added that the Spice Girls continue to be marketable since they were never “over-sexualized” during the height of their popular. The writer feels this is what helps the group maintain their “universal appeal.”
Since the Spice Girls are enjoying a bit of a revival at the moment, a number of curious parties are expected to turn out for the premiere of Viva Forever in London tonight.
