WWE Rumors, Spoilers: John Cena To Become A ‘Free Agent’ Upon His Return To ‘SmackDown Live’
John Cena hasn’t been seen since WrestleMania 33 and it is no surprise due to out-of-the-ring commitments, but when his return happens next month, things will be very different. It has already been confirmed that Cena is going to be back on SmackDown Live for the 4th of July episode in Phoenix, but is that where he will stay? Rumor has it that the multi-time world champion may actually become a free agent when he heads back to WWE for a full-time career.
As reported by the Boston Herald, John Cena is heading back to WWE for the patriotic holiday episode which will mean he’s done filming and promoting American Grit. His return could not come any sooner for the company either as they need a jump in the ratings, and that is quite possibly why a huge angle is rumored for Cena.
There are a number of rumors running around as to what Cena could do upon his return as his last angle had him feuding with The Miz. That has since ended and Miz is actually on a different brand than him, but that may not be a problem.
Sportskeeda is actually reporting that Cena is penciled in to face off against Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam this August. Not only would that put Cena back into the main event title scene, but it would also make for a fresh and brand new feud.
But, if Cena wins the WWE Championship, would he take it over to Monday Night Raw?
Another rumor floating around right now is that John Cena may even end up as a “free agent” of sorts, but not outside of WWE, of course. In regard to his “free agency,” Wrestling Inc. reported that Cena would be able to appear on both Raw and SmackDown Live without any issue of contractual status.
This is an obvious plan that WWE has in mind to help raise the ratings of both shows since they know so many people tune in to see the longtime superstar. Having him appear on both brands would also allow for the spontaneity of fans wondering, “Where will John Cena be this week?”
It makes a lot of sense, but this rumor does poke a few holes in the rumor that Cena will be feuding with Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship later this summer. Should that feud come into play and he’s a “free agent,” it would be hard to think that Cena could win the title and then, jump to Raw for a while.
That is unless Cena is used as the primary world champion for both shows while Brock Lesnar is taking time off yet again. As recently reported by Inquisitr, Lesnar is expected to hold onto the WWE Universal Championship until WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans, but he won’t be on TV all that time.
During his absence, it has truly hurt Raw to be without a world/universal champion. Allowing John Cena to be a world champion and take the belt between both brands could make for very interesting television and give Raw and SmackDown superstars the ultimate goal to shoot for.
Of course, all of this is just a rumor right now and the only certainty is that he will be back on the Fourth of July.
John Cena is an obvious draw in the world of professional wrestling and WWE knows he is one of the most profitable superstars they have. Both Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live need help with their ratings, and the former is in desperate need. Even though there are plans for Cena to take on Jinder Mahal at SummerSlam in August, don’t be surprised to see the “free agent” jumping back-and-forth between brands in the future.
