New Girl was renewed for its seventh and final season back in May. Earlier spoilers revealed that Season 7 would pick up three years after the last season finale. Jake Johnson, who plays Nick Miller in the hit Fox sitcom, teased that Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick could end up getting married come Season 7.
Early this week, a fan asked Jake Johnson on Twitter if Nick and Jess will get married in Season 7.
“I think so, yes,” Johnson replied, causing his followers to freak out.
New Girl fans were definitely thrilled with Johnson’s prediction, saying that it was a dream come true for them. A few were even hoping that the series finale would show Jess pregnant with Nick’s baby.
Deadline previously reported that New Girl came “very, very close” to getting canceled by Fox. Given that most of the main cast will not be able to return to work until fall, the network was allegedly thinking of dropping the ax on the sitcom. It also helped that the Season 6 finale somewhat felt like a good ending, nonetheless.
However, New Girl creator and executive producer Liz Meriwether reportedly made a last-minute decision to pitch a final-season arc to Fox. They envisioned Season 7 to feature major milestones for all the main characters over the period of one year. Fans will find out what happened to Nick and Jess after that kiss in the elevator, how Cece (Hannah Simone) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) are handling their life as new parents, as well as Winston (Lamorne Morris) and Ally (Nasim Pedrad) as newlyweds.
It was also teased that the series finale will also feature a “big milestone.” Will New Girl end with Nick and Jess tying the knot?
In an interview with TV Line , New Girl executive producers Brett Baer and Dave Finkel admitted that their decision to bring Nick and Jess back together during the Season 5 finale was largely because they were still uncertain about the show’s renewal. They pointed out that it wouldn’t be right for fans, who were rooting for Nick and Jess since the beginning, to have the show go off the air without giving the duo’s love story a satisfactory conclusion.
“That said, we’re obviously hoping [for a Season 7]. We have ideas for how to propel the show into the future. But we didn’t want to go off the air without answering this question,” Baer said.
Although perhaps fans are hoping that Season 7 will focus on Nick and Jess’s relationship, the showrunners hinted that that might just not be the case after all. Even if both characters significantly evolved during the past six seasons, Finkel hinted that there will still be challenges along the way.
“They will still be characters in flux. I definitely think they’ve grown in massive ways since the last time they were together, but are they ready for each other yet? I don’t necessarily know. They are still weirdos,” he said.
Meanwhile, the New Girl showrunners also discussed the possibility of actually publishing Nick’s book, The Pepperwood Chronicles . Baer told Entertainment Weekly they would absolutely love to release it as an actual book given the opportunity. As they have all the materials they needed, Finkel added that they will be able to finish writing the entire The Pepperwood Chronicles in a day.
“ I think some of the most fun anybody on this show who’s a writer has ever had has been pitching Pepperwood -isms and Pepperwood paragraphs and sentences. We’ve got mountains and mountains of material that have been pitched over the last five or six years, and it’s all hilarious,” he added.
