Tatiana Maslany Dishes Spoilers On The Final Season Of ‘Orphan Black’

Orphan Black fans have been along on a wild ride that hasn’t always delivered when it comes to satisfying revelations to some of the show’s more insidious mysteries. The series, upon which star Tatiana Maslany also serves as producer, has often existed in a gray area between right and wrong, so, while each mystery has eventually been resolved, those solutions may not have always pleased the fans of the series. As Orphan Black now comes to a conclusion of sorts, Maslany opens up about what fans can expect from the final season and teases that not everyone will be happy with the ending.

Orphan Black Is Still About Family And Tatiana Maslany’s Clone Club

Speaking to US Weekly, Tatiana Maslany revealed that the final season of Orphan Black will continue with the themes of family and sisterhood. In fact, the actress who plays all of the female clones says the series will delve deeper into those sisterly bonds than ever before. She adds that, while she can’t give away too much about the plot of season 5, the final Orphan Black installment has a strong sense of family and of belonging.

Regarding those feelings of family, Tatiana says she likes the way Orphan Black has always challenged traditional female roles within the family dynamic. Particularly strong is the unique take on motherhood within the BBC America series. Maslany refers specifically to the sharing of motherhood responsibilities between Sarah and Mrs. S (Maria Doyle Kennedy) in raising Kira (Skyler Wexler).

Moving onto other Orphan Black characters, Tatiana wouldn’t deny or confirm the truth of rumors of a Cosima and Delphine (Evelyne Brochu) wedding, letting fans simmer with that possibility until the season 5 premiere.

Ms. Maslany added that some of her favorite scenes involve Donnie (Kristian Bruun) and Alison, because of the great lengths to which they will go to protect each other. Tatiana noted that the couple has committed a number of murders in the four-year run of Orphan Black.

“They’ve murdered as much as Helena. They’re pretty fierce. I love that veneer of perfection, the veneer of societal normality and then you get to know who they really are,” says the Orphan Black star. “Every time I read an Alison scene or an Alison and Donnie scene, I’m excited.”

Asked what she hopes fans will take away from the end of Orphan Black, Ms. Maslany says she’s just happy for the immense support the series has received from fans. She adds that the show wouldn’t have lasted as long as it did without the support of Clone Club, so season 5 is the cast’s gift to those fans.

The Orphan Black Cast And Crew Says Goodbye

Gathering together, Orphan Black stars Tatiana Maslany and Kristian Bruun joined director John Fawcett and writer Graeme Mansion in teasing the last season of the series, reports Toronto Star. For Ms. Maslany, the ending is sad and she says she still has moments of denial, though those instances are quickly destroyed by a random group text from co-stars or a sudden onset of tears. She adds that the cast often experienced small epiphanies, as they realized they were filming a final scene for a character.

“You start being like, ‘Oh, is this the last time we see this character?… Is this the last time we’re going to be on this set?’ It’s pretty bizarre, surreal.”

While Maslany wouldn’t say much about the season 5 plot, her Orphan Black co-star, Kristian Bruun, says the last installment is the heaviest of the series, because fans will finally discover the truth behind Clone Club. He adds that many of those answers won’t leave to happy endings, but that’s not what Orphan Black is really about.

Meanwhile, director John Fawcett revealed that Orphan Black has existed far longer than fans realize, as he shared a little bit about spending a decade trying to sell the idea.

“And you know, (usually) after two or three years you start to lose a little interest in projects that don’t go anywhere, but this one just didn’t ever fail us,” says the Orphan Black director. “We were always excited about trying to (get it made).”

When asked years ago about making the idea of clones relevant and intriguing in a scripted series, Graeme Mansion often credited Tatiana Maslany for her incredible acting talent. It was said that Tatiana set the standard for the writers, director, and for the rest of the Orphan Black cast.

Season 5 of Orphan Black premieres on Saturday, June 10, on BBC America.
