Extreme Rules 2017: Roman Reigns v. Seth Rollins v. Samoa Joe v. Finn Balor v. Bray Wyatt match preview

WWE Extreme Rules takes lace tonight in Baltimore, Maryland, and will broadcast live on the WWE Network. The main event of the show is a huge five-way, extreme rules, anything goes match with the winner getting a title shot against WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar at Great Balls of Fire. The match includes former world champions Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Bray Wyatt, former Universal Champion Finn Balor, and former NXT champion Samoa Joe.

Here is a look at tonight’s WWE match and the storylines heading into the huge Extreme Rules main event.

Roman Reigns

The biggest name in tonight’s WWE Extreme Rules main event is Roman Reigns. He has been a champion and actually won the title at WrestleMania 32 from Triple H. However, Roman Reigns has struggled with winning over the fans support, and the WWE has plans to try to push him back to the top.

However, Roman Reigns fighting Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship is going to likely wait until WrestleMania 34 next year, so there is little chance of him winning tonight at Extreme Rules. One interesting outcome could be the return of Braun Strowman, who said he is not finished with Roman Reigns yet, and the Monster Among Men costing Roman the WWE title opportunity.

Seth Rollins

As of Sunday morning, the new odds have moved the former Architect of The Shield into the favorite to win the Extreme Rules match tonight. There have been a lot of rumors lately surrounding Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins feuding this summer, and while they could kick that off in the match tonight, there is also a chance that Rollins could win the WWE title shot and that could push Roman Reigns further over the edge.

Bray Wyatt

Up next is Bray Wyatt. This is an interesting wrestler in the Extreme Rules match because two years ago, Bray Wyatt and Brock Lesnar seemed to be starting a feud when the Wyatt Family eliminated Brock from the Royal Rumble. The rumors indicated that Lesnar would fight Braun Strowman at WrestleMania that year, but it never happened. While Braun Strowman will get his shot at Lesnar this year, possibly at SummerSlam, it looks like Bray Wyatt might get a WWE title shot as well.

The Staples Center in Los Angeles is advertising Monday Night Raw for June 26, two weeks before the WWE holds their Great Balls of Fire pay-per-view. Television commercials indicate that Brock Lesnar will be at the show and defend his title against Bray Wyatt. That is likely to be a dark match but is causing some fans to think Wyatt will get the win tonight at Extreme Rules.

Samoa Joe

For a short time, Samoa Joe was the odds-on favorite to win the Extreme Rules main event tonight. That makes sense because Brock Lesnar will have at least three more WWE Universal title defenses between Great Balls of Fire and WrestleMania 34 and the WWE might want to build up fresh contenders for him. Samoa Joe has always said he would love to fight Brock Lesnar and the MMA-styled brawl they could put on would be very fresh compared to other recent WWE Lesnar matches.

Finn Balor

The final man involved in the Extreme Rules match tonight got a big endorsement on Monday Night Raw two weeks ago. Paul Heyman came out and said that everyone was overlooking Finn Balor, but Heyman considered Balor to be the favorite to win at Extreme Rules and go on to fight Brock Lesnar at Great Balls of Fire.

Finn Balor is also a former WWE Universal Champion – the first in the history of the title belt – and he never lost it due to tearing his labrum. The WWE clearly wants to push Finn Balor back to the top but having him come out and immediately lose to Brock Lesnar might not be the way to go. Finn Balor will get his shot, but Extreme Rules is likely to go in a different direction tonight.
