Nicole Kidman As Aquaman’s Mother: How The Aussie Actress Feels About Playing Jason Momoa’s Onscreen Mom
Nicole Kidman has played different mother roles in her earlier movies, and now she is set to take on a big one — as Aquaman’s mother. Keith Urban’s wife has agreed to play as Jason Momoa’s onscreen mom, Lady Atlanna, and she’s pretty excited about it.
The Oscar-winning actress revealed how she is looking forward to playing the character. Once the schedule has been finalized, Kidman will go to Australia later this year to start filming.
The 49-year-old actress also shared in a recent interview with Deadline how the pitching for Arthur Curry’s mom with director James Wan went. Nicole said that she and Wan are good friends and she’s been wanting to work with her fellow Australian. And when the director pitched Atlanna to her, there was never a hint of hesitation from Nicole.
“Well, James Wan is Australian, and he’s a friend of mine. I think he’s going to make an amazing movie. We’ve always circled each other, so when he came to me, I was like, ‘James, I’ll do anything for you.'”
Kidman is not only interested in playing Aquaman’s mother because of her friendship with Wan, but also because she was told that she’ll be playing a “female warrior from the sea” who gets to wear a mother-of-pearl — something that won her over.
“As soon as he said I could wear mother-of-pearl and be a mermaid warrior, I said I’m done. Please,” she previously told Entertainment Weekly. “If there is one thing I have to do in my life, I have to be that.”
It didn’t take a lot to convince Nicole because she knew she’d enjoy playing as Atlanna in Aquaman and that she’ll have loads of fun doing the film.
Kidman’s role in Aquaman will be her first major superhero movie in which she plays the actual super character, as opposed to 1995’s Batman Forever, where she played a psychologist and Bruce Wayne’s love interest. The mother-of-four was also said to be one of the actors considered for the role of a high-ranking Amazonian in Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman. With Kidman signed on to be a badass supermom, fans can only hope that they will see more of her doing some action scenes with Momoa.
It remains unclear how Nicole Kidman’s Atlanna will be used in Aquaman, but in one version of Atlanna’s story in the comics, she is said to have left Atlantis and fallen in love with Tom Curry in the surface world. She got pregnant but was forcibly sent back to Atlantis by her father. Atlantean soldiers were sent to retrieve her and in the process, Tom was almost killed.
Atlanna dies while giving birth to her child, Arthur, who was then abandoned on Mercy Reef. Dolphins took back the child to his father who took him to the surface world. Once the King of Atlantis dies, his advisor went to look for the child, so he can return to the seas. Tom mistakes the encounter as an attack and ends up fighting the Atlantean soldiers to death. In this version of the story, Aquaman grew up to be a violent person that lacks compassion.
Aquaman is set to release in theaters on Dec. 21, 2018. Besides Nicole and Momoa, the movie stars Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Orm or the Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Vulko and Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry, among others. Plot details have yet to be revealed, but the movie will be set after events in Justice League, according to Cinema Blend.
Aquaman will make his first debut in the DCEU in Justice League, which hits theaters on Nov. 17.
