PlanetSide 2 may have gotten off to a rocky start when it launched on November 20, but many of the issues have since been addressed and, looking forward, things are looking good for Sony Online Entertainment’s free-to-play MMOFPS.
Whether or not PlanetSide 2 has lasting appeal with gamers remains to be seen, but Sony Online Entertainment is optimistic that the MMOFPS will be around for quite some time–a very, very long time, if SOE president John Smedley gets his way.
In a post on his blog (via Examiner ), Smedley revealed that SOE is looking to keep PlanetSide 2 around well into the future, possibly even until 2025.
“We have games that have run for over 13 years, so when we’re making Planetside 2 we aren’t looking at what it’s like in 2012,” Smedley wrote on his blog. “We’re thinking about a game we plan to have running in 2025.”
In the immediate future, Smedley and SOE have some big ideas to keep PlanetSide 2 fresh over the next several years. Ultimately, however, what comes to PlanetSide 2 will rest in the hands of fans.
“We have a 3 year plan,” Smedley said. “That’s really big. We plan on putting that out to the users at some point in the near future. This isn’t some “vision” we plan on imparting on our players. It’s our thoughts on what we think would be cool.
“We will listen to our users feedback and make changes based on that feedback. We think we have some killer ideas but our players have pretty good ones too! I want to be super clear here – these are just some of the ideas. The team has a ton.”
Smedley offered a glimpse at what sort of content PlanetSide 2 players can expect in the future. The team is working on things like player-owned bases, harvestable resources, NPC enemies and armies, and more still.
Have you tried PlanetSide 2 yet? If so, what did you think of it?
