‘I Screwed Up Royally,’ Says David Petraeus
Ex-CIA chief David Petraeus admitted to something that everyone already knew today: He screwed up royally.
Petraues, who resigned from his position as the head of the CIA earlier this month after it was discovered that he was having an affair, admitted in a letter to his friend and retired Brig. Gen. James Shelton that he had made a big mistake.
Petraeus wrote:
“I screwed up royally. I paid the price (appropriately) and I sought to do the right thing at the end of the day.”
Petraeus also told the retired general that he was extremely lucky to have his wife Holly in his life and was confident that they would be able to move past the affair.
Petraeus said:
“Team Petraeus will survive though [I] have obviously created enormous difficulty for us. Holly is, however, once again demonstrating how incredibly fortunate I was to marry her.”
Petraeus hasn’t spoken publicly about the affair since he resigned from the CIA but Shelton talked to the NY Post about the letter he received from his friend.
Shelton said:
“He’s a superb human being. What happened to him happened to a number of people … He’s a man, and all men have an Achilles’ heel.”
Shelton’s words echo the sentiment of televangelist Pat Robertson who blamed the affair on Paula Broadwell saying that Petraeus is “a man.”
“She [Broadwell] is an extremely good-looking woman, she is a marathon runner, […] she’s running with him [Petraeus] and she’s writing a biography. I think the term is ‘propinquity,’ and there was a lot of propinquity going on [laughs]. I mean, who knows? The man’s off in a foreign land, and he’s lonely, and here’s a good-looking lady throwing herself at him. I mean, he’s a man.”
Do you agree that David Petraeus screwed up royally? Do you think “Team Petraeus” will able to move past the affair?
