WWE News: Bill Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar Overshadows ‘Fastlane’ Title Match
Ever since Bill Goldberg returned to the WWE, the only thing that has mattered was his feud with Brock Lesnar. The two are set to have their third singles match at WrestleMania this year, and that seems to be what WWE fans are most interested in. However, tonight at Fastlane, Bill Goldberg faces Kevin Owens for the WWE Universal Championship, something that seems to be overshadowed by the big money match one month from now.
Bill Goldberg has tried to keep the interest up for his title opportunity with Kevin Owens. He has used Twitter to keep fans updated that he is actually fighting someone not named Brock Lesnar tonight. He posted a comment that the clock is ticking for Kevin Owens tonight and, as always, Owens was shooting right back like only he can.
This is a huge chance for Kevin Owens. If Bill Goldberg comes in and just destroys him like he did Brock Lesnar, it could kill any momentum that Owens has built up. It would be an uphill battle to make him a serious world title contender again.
While there are people who argue that losing to Bill Goldberg shouldn’t hurt a person’s standing, getting destroyed would severely damage Kevin Owens from here on out in the WWE and really hurt his upcoming WrestleMania match against Chris Jericho. Of course, Jericho could go a long ways on helping Kevin get that heat back in the WrestleMania match, but it wouldn’t be easy.
However, for Bill Goldberg, the match at Fastlane is much more important than people seem to think. Yes, Kevin Owens is no Brock Lesnar, but Bill Goldberg has never wrestled in a singles match longer than one minute since returning to the WWE. There is no way the WrestleMania match can go two minutes without fans angerly rebelling.
That means that, if Bill Goldberg and Brock Lesnar want to put on a real money match for WWE fans, it needs to last a decent amount of time. A fight with Kevin Owens trying to pull out every trick could prove that Bill Goldberg can actually wrestle in a real match without protection.
While many fans may look past the Kevin Owens match at Fastlane, Bill Goldberg can’t look past this match and neither can the WWE. This might be the only chance to prove that Bill Goldberg can go in a long match against someone and Kevin might be the perfect foil.
There are rumors that Chris Jericho shows up at Fastlane to interfere. In the past, it was easy to see the Kevin Owens attack on Chris Jericho as a trap where they would reteam at Fastlane when Bill Goldberg least expected it. However, the brutality of the attack makes that unlikely.

Bill Goldberg is highly favored by oddsmakers to beat Kevin Owens at WWE Fastlane, but there is always a chance it could be by disqualification based on outside interference or count out. With Kevin not aligned with Triple H, he might have backup from Samoa Joe. Whatever happens, the match with Bill Goldberg could be more interesting than people have given it credit for.
Of course, the Kevin Owens vs. Bill Goldberg Fastlane match could end up being the quick, dominant two-minute squash that many people expect. If it is, that won’t do Bill Goldberg any favors, and it will leave the biggest match at WrestleMania this year as a huge question mark for the WWE.
