Kansas City Shooting Leaves Three Dead, One Injured
Independence, MO — A shooting in a Kansas City suburb has left three people dead and one injured after three gunmen broke into a house and fatally shot a woman, her son, and her boyfriend. The fourth victim was critically injured.
There has been no motive established for the shooting at the home in Independence, though police Captain John Cato stated it was not a random act, reports USA Today. Cato stated:
“This was an armed attempted residential robbery. They probably knew or at least were associated with one another.”
The victims have been identified as Maria Hernandez, 48; her boyfriend, Thomas Madrigal; and her son, Antonio, age 20. The fourth person involved has not been identified yet.
The Washington Post notes that authorities were seen removing two bodies from the Kansas City shooting scene before 3 pm on Friday using silver bags. Neighbors of the victims stated they moved into the house in the last year.
Police are not certain how many people lived in the house, but they believe the family may have included up to six children, though some may be grown and living elsewhere.
One neighbor, Claudette Henson, stated she recently saw Maria Hernandez at a football game one of Maria’s sons played in. Henson stated:
“She seemed like a very sweet lady, just the way she was interacting with her kids and how she was there to support her little one at the game. They were good kids, never caused any problems.”
The Kansas City suburb shootings were reported around 4:30 am, and a search for the suspects responsible continues. Cato added that at least two of the suspects may be armed.
