Five Iconic Directors Refuse To Direct The New Star Wars
Since Disney acquired the rights to the iconic classic Star Wars, they have announced plans to begin a new trilogy. The first new installment of the Star Wars Franchise will be release in 2015. The internet has been buzzing with suggestions of who will be directing the film. There are five iconic directors who have basically said that they will not be in the running, due to various reasons. According to a list compiled by Yahoo Entertainment News, the following five have all declined to get involved.
1. Steven Spielberg: The director of Jaws and Schindler’s List says that he will not be getting involved with the new Star Wars franchise. Although he was one of the first people to see the original and was pretty much the only person who told creator/director George Lucas that it was any good, he has said that directing the new trilogy was outside of his interest zone.
Spielberg said:
“No! No! It’s not my genre. It’s my best friend George’s genre.”
2. J.J. Abrams:Abrams is widely credited with taking an iconic Sci-fi franchise, Star Trek, and bringing it back t the main stream. The new Star Trek movie was widely acclaimed and extremely successful at the box office. Yet Abrams said he is content to be a one hit wonder in the Sci-Fi scene.
Abrams said:
“Look, Star Wars is one of my favorite movies of all time. I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series. I was never a big Star Trek fan growing up, so for me, working on Star Trek didn’t have any of that, you know, almost fatal sacrilege, and so, I am looking forward more then anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!”
3. Quentin Tarantino:There were many in the Star Wars fanbase that thought it was a perfect fit to have Tarantino bring a dark energy to the franchise and help bring it in line with other comic book/Sci-Fi movies that have done very well as of late. Tarantino quickly put the brakes on any consideration of him doing the job.
Tarantino said:
“I could so care less. Especially if Disney’s going to do it. I’m not interested in the Simon West version of Star Wars.”
4. Zack Snyder: Snyder’s been charged with bringing Superman back into the main stream, and his hit 300 is still the stuff of legends, but Snyder says his interest in Star Wars just isn’t there.
Snyder said:
“I don’t think I’d be interested in [directing it]. I’m a huge Star Wars fanatic. I just think doing [episodes] seven, eight, and nine is just a slippery slope. It’s a whole other mythological experiment I’m excited to see, but it’s a lot of effort.”
5. George Lucas: There were plenty of rumors when the deal was announced between Disney and LucasFilms that Lucas would return to see his Star Wars franchise to completion. Yet Lucas basically said that is not an option, leaving Star Wars fans wondering if his refusal to get involved is a slight acknowledgment that the prequel trilogy was not what anyone had hoped it would be.
Lucas Said:
“I always said I wasn’t going to do anymore, and that’s true, I’m not going to do anymore.”
