Ashley Judd To Run For Senate? Actress Could Challenge Mitch McConnell In 2014
Ashley Judd may or may not be running for the US Senate.
The Louisville Courier-Journal reported today that a number of Democrats are urging the actress to run against GOP Majority leader Mitch McConnell in 2014. Judd said that she was flattered by the consideration but said that she isn’t ready to think about 2014 just yet.
Judd said:
“I cherish Kentucky, heart and soul, and while I’m very honored by the consideration, we have just finished an election, so let’s focus on coming together to keep moving America’s families, and especially our kids, forward.”
Rep. John Yarmuth, of Kentucky’s 3rd district, is one person hoping that Judd enters the race. Yarmuth said Judd would actually have a chance to unseat McConnell, who is the longest-serving U.S. Senator in Kentucky history.
But McConnell, like Judd, isn’t ready to worry about the 2014 election just yet. McConnell responded to the Ashley Judd rumors saying that he was a big fan of the star’s movies.
McConnell’s campaign manager, Jesse Benton, said:
“Senator McConnell and his wife are big fans of Ashley Judd’s movies and appreciate her energy, particularly when it comes to getting young people engaged in the political process.”
Judd has been active in Democrat politics over the last few years and has mentioned a run at the senate before. In September, Judd talked at a forum about women in politics and said that running for senate was a possibility in the future.
Judd said:
“I do receive a lot of encouragement to run … and my sincere desire is to be useful. I want to serve … and I may be doing that to the best of my capacity … in the space I’m already operating in. Or, it may be time to look at possibly running for office.”
Judd supported Obama during the campaign this year and was a Tennessee delegate to the Democratic National Convention.
