‘Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo’ To Feature Two High-Profile Cameos: Ji Soo And Seohyun From ‘Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo’ Will Make Future Appearance In K-Drama [Video]

Munhwa Broadcasting System (MBC) K-drama Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo is holding its own by doing something I, Omega, wrote about early in the series and that is to stand out by concentrating on unique writing and high-profile cameos of well-known Korean actors. For many who tuned in to watch Lee Sung Kyung’s first K-drama as the main lead, those two stood out. Examples of the former include the argumentive dialogue both Kim Bok Joo and Jung Joon Hyung had over a sausage and when Bok Joo’s father, Kim Chang Gul, telling Bok Joo who is eating a piece of chicken to “shove that chicken into her mouth with moderation.”

As an example of the latter, Lee Jong Suk — the popular actor known for his roles in Doctor Stranger, Pinocchio, and W — made a cameo appearance in the second episode when all he wanted to eat was popcorn at the Kim’s chicken restaurant. His cameo even played “Where Are U” by Jung Joon Young, the theme song for W. Let’s not forget about Kang Ki Young who plays Kim Dae Ho. He’s literally one of those Korean actors who’s “been in everything” this year including Please Come Back Mister, Let’s Fight Ghost, and W.

MBC may have eased up a little bit on the unique writing, but they are really pushing the high-profile cameo appearances. It seems the Korean broadcasting station is being blessed with Nam Joo Hyuk’s connections and friendships when he was a supporting cast member on Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. In episode eight and nine, Z.Hera made a cameo appearance as Song Shi Ho’s sister, Song Shi Eon. Now recent reports are showing that two more Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo stars will cameo, Ji Soo and Seohyun.

As mentioned earlier, MBC might be blessed with Nam Joo Hyuk’s connections and friendships with fellow cast members of Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. For those who do not know, he played the supporting character of Wang Baek Ha, the 13th prince during the reign of King Taejo of the Goryeo Dynasty. Ji Soo played Wang Jung, the 14th prince while Seohyun played Woo Hee, a gisaeng and last princess of Later Baekje.

The producers on the set of Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo confirmed Ji Soo and Seohyun’s cameo appearances, as reported by AllKpop. They provided the following official statement to the press.

“Ji Soo and Seohyun will be making a special appearance in episode 11 airing the 21st, and episode 12 airing the 22nd respectively.”

High-profile cameo appearances will help Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo hold its own as it continues to go one-on-one, head-to-head against the Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) powerhouse K-drama, The Legend of the Blue Sea. There is very little chance of the series overtaking the SBS series featuring the 2016 K-drama returns of “the woman who found love from another star” Jun Ji Hyun and “the boy over flowers” Lee Min Ho, but it can at least keep its core K-drama fan base entertained. By doing so, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo can keep its steady viewership ratings between four to six percent for the nation of South Korea intact, as provided by TNmS Media Korea and AGB Nielsen Korea.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 p.m. KST on MBC. For those who do not have access to Korean free-to-watch channels, the K-drama can be seen exclusively for Viki Pass members on Viki.
