Blink-182 Named Most Animal-Friendly Band Among Miley Cyrus, Davey Havok
Blink-182 have been honored as the most animal-friendly band of 2016. The reigning pop-punk trio, who released comeback album California earlier this year, beat out fellow musical artists Matt and Kim, Tonight Alive, and Farewell My Love to nab the eco-friendly distinction at PETA2’s 11th annual Libby Awards.
Singer Miley Cyrus and musician Davey Havok (of rock band AFI) were also commended at the annual PETA2 ceremony. Cyrus was awarded the Best Voice for Animals prize, while Havok was named Hero of the Year for Animals. The Libby Awards is the recognition ceremony organized by PETA’s youth-focused activism branch.
Miley Cyrus has often been pinpointed as one of the entertainment industry’s most outspoken animal rights activists. A strong supporter of animal rescue services, Cyrus has adopted numerous pets from such organizations and has even attended to a pet pig. Miley’s stance on veganism was made clear in last year’s “Pablow the Blowfish,” her entreaty again eating fish from Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz.
As reported by TeamRock, Blink-182’s animal-friendly PETA prize stems from the group’s dedication to animal rights activism and their strict adherence to a meat-free diet. Original Blink-182 bassist-vocalist Mark Hoppus and longtime Blink drummer Travis Barker each practice a vegan lifestyle, while Blink’s newest bandmate, guitarist, and singer Matt Skiba, is a dedicated vegetarian. It is not explicitly known if former Blink guitarist-vocalist Tom DeLonge currently advocates vegan or vegetarian practices.
As covered by the Belfast Telegraph, Miley Cyrus topped Sia and the Misfits‘ Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein in winning her Best Voice for Animals award. Miley’s current beau, Liam Hemsworth, was also nominated in the Hero of the Year for Animals category, among other entertainers such as singer Jhene Aiko and TV actor Corey Fogelmanis.
Blink-182 appears serious in their commitment to their vegan and vegetarian diets. As reported by VegNews earlier this year, the Blink boys even hired a vegan chef to accompany them on the road. The chef, Mary Mattern, is a well-known Instagram personality thanks to her popular vegan cookbook and plant-based recipes.
Other PETA2 Libby Award winners for 2016 included YouTube star Kalel for Best PETA2 Ad, Vine personality Hayes Grier for Best Use of Internet Stardom for Animals, and Leah Kelly as Animal Activist of the Year. The complete Libby Award winners list can be found here.
PETA2 markets itself as “the largest youth animal rights group in the world.” It is an arm of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the non-profit animal rights organization which was started in the early ’80s. PETA was founded on March 22, 1980, by activists Ingrid Newkirk and Alex Pacheco.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Blink-182’s most recent California single, “She’s Out of Her Mind,” was made into a comical music video starring Workaholics funnyman Adam Devine. The scantily-clad clip recreated Blink’s 1999 hit “What’s My Age Again” from their watershed Enema of the State album.
Amusingly, Blink-182 was also uncannily involved in this year’s presidential election cycle. In October, leaked communications from a WikiLeaks email dump uncovered correspondence between Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta, and former Blink co-frontman DeLonge. As reported by the Inquisitr, the emails involved exchanges between DeLonge and Podesta regarding the existence of extraterrestrial life, as DeLonge has seemingly interviewed Podesta for a documentary film regarding the government’s awareness of alien technology.
