For many, watching the Sound of Music at Christmas time is a holiday tradition. ABC routinely airs the movie before Christmas, but some, even though they appreciate the tradition, don’t necessarily understand it. There are several online threads where viewers have ongoing discussions as to why the Sound of Music is considered a Christmas movie, such as this Yahoo Questions thread. The film was released in March 1965, and there are no Christmas trees or carols heard. The movie centers around a wayward nun, Maria, who left the convent to work as a governess for the Von Trapp family. Other than the Catholic presence, Mother Superior and convent, there is little in the film depicting religion or Christmas. The movie is family oriented and contains a wonderful, heartfelt message and that might be why it is associated with Christmas. Maybe ABC simply chose to play it during Christmas because they like the movie. No one knows the exact reason, but there is no doubt that a tradition has been established. ABC shared the hashtag #MyBestHolidayMemory and asked the Sound of Music viewers to share their favorite holiday memories associated with the movie.
