Johnny Depp: Why The Star Is Parting With His 15-Bed, 14-Bath French Estate, Money Troubles Or Moving On?

Johnny Depp seems to be keen on parting with a number of his properties. Recently he has decided to sell a number of Los Angles condos he owns, and now it’s being reported that Depp is selling a gorgeous French estate which he has owned for roughly 15 years.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor apparently went to great measures to convert his French property into one breathtaking residence. The property that includes 15 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms is now on the market. The estate is located in the French countryside just outside of Saint-Tropez, and it is the location the actor raised his children, Lily Rose, now 17, and Jack, now 14. Entertainment Tonight shares the property details.

“The breathtaking property spans 37 acres and includes a 4,300-square-foot main house, six guest cottages, an art studio, two swimming pools, a gym, a bar, a restaurant, 15 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms.”

Depp has reportedly spent over $10 million to restore and decorate the estate that is comprised of a number of buildings which date back to pre-French Revolution. A chapel on the property was converted into a beautiful guest house, and the confessional has been made into a closet.

The grounds of the estate have vineyards, olive groves and oak trees that are some 300 years old. The actor came to acquire the property in 2001, but the price he paid is unknown. Johnny Depp first put the property up for sale in 2015, and it had an asking price of $25 million, but it was later taken off the market. It is now back up for sale with an asking price of $40 million.

The estate was once the home of Depp and his former partner of 14 years, Vanessa Paradis. Johnny spoke about life on the estate back in 2009 during an interview with VSD, noting that it gave him the stability and balance that he needed due to his hectic career. Depp said that living in southern France “has given me everything. A marvelous family and also an equilibrium which I missed enormously.”

“With Vanessa and the kids, we live in a sort of little village in the south and I have the impression of being in paradise,” he continued. “It’s a property of about 30 acres and you know what I do there? Absolutely nothing.”

A source close to Johnny has relayed that Depp’s reason for selling his lavish estate is because he is ready to move on from that chapter of his life. There have been a number of rumors circulating ever since Depp reportedly stated he wouldn’t pay his ex-wife, Amber Heard, the $7 million owed for their divorce settlement that the actor is experiencing money troubles. However, these claims have not been verified.

Depp has stated that he refuses to pay the remaining $6.8 million he owes to Heard due to the starlet speaking out about domestic violence in a recent PSA and within a penned essay. The Daily Beast relays the issue that has caused Johnny to withhold the remaining funds, which Amber has vowed to give to charity.

“Amber Heard has been a vocal activist for women in abusive relationships since splitting with Johnny Depp, whom she alleged physically abused her, but the series of statements she has made on the issue have put the $6.8 million divorce settlement she hammered out with the actor in jeopardy, according to reports.”

Although Heard did not name Johnny Depp in the Public Service Announcement or essay, the settlement may still be in jeopardy seeing as the actress continues to refer to herself as a victim of domestic violence at a time which is soon after she alleged Depp abused her. Both stars are working with their legal teams to make their side heard in court.
