Could Idris Elba Be The First Black James Bond?
Skyfall has been dominating the International box office for the last week, but that hasn’t stopped gossip and rumors spreading over who may be the next James Bond after Daniel Craig’s departure.
Craig is believed to have signed up for at least two more James Bond movies but Skyfall actress Naomie Harris has revealed that the star of The Wire Idris Elba has already been in discussions with producer Barbara Broccoli over playing the role.
Elba is mostly known as Stringer Bell in the HBO drama, which is often lauded as the greatest television series of all time, but more recently he has starred in the Hollywood blockbusters Thor and Prometheus.
Harris, who is starring in the Nelson Mandela biopic Long Walk To Freedom alongside Elba who will portray the former South African president, stated, “I didn’t realise that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idrsi and he said that he met (Bond Producer) Barbara Broccoli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond.”
Harris added, “I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he’s a great guy.”
Elba though has already noted the responsibility that comes with playing the role, proclaiming,”I just don’t want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.”
