WWE News: Legend Speaks On The Undertaker And Shawn Michaels At The 2017 ‘Royal Rumble’
The end of 2016 is quickly approaching, and fans are already looking to one of the most enjoyable pay-per-view events of the year in 2017 — the Royal Rumble. There are already two big names who have entered the huge match — Bill Goldberg and Brock Lesnar — but there is a bit more chatter going on. Seeing as the Royal Rumble is happening in San Antonio, Texas, one WWE legend feels The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels could add a lot to the event.
On January 29, 2017, the Royal Rumble will take place at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. That match will determine who will head to WrestleMania 33 in Orlando and main event the show for either the WWE World Title or WWE Universal Title.
Not a lot is known about the event at the moment, but as confirmed by the official website of WWE, both Goldberg and Brock Lesnar have officially entered the match. They will be just two of the 30 superstars in the battle royal who hope to win the ultimate title shot.
WWE legend Jim Ross is pleased with the company’s plan to put those two men into the Royal Rumble match as he knows it will make fans happy and increase ticket sales, according to his blog, JRs BBQ.
“I like that both Lesnar and Goldberg are both in the Royal Rumble match as it should help move tickets locally for the Alamo Dome extravaganza.”
While those two names being entered into the battle royal may be known, there truly isn’t much else known as of this writing. Taking place in San Antonio, though, Jim Ross feels he knows what else would be a ticket sale booster.
JR thinks that having legends like The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels at the Royal Rumble would do a lot for the hometown crowd.
“I’d love to see an official announcement that both HBK and Taker are going to be on hand in some role as to add to the marketable nostalgia for the event. The two legends do not need to wrestle but being creatively utilized in some manageable manner would help the event feel bigger and more desirable to attend.”
Shawn Michaels has said on numerous occasions that he is indeed retired and will not wrestle again. Sure, there is the whole “never say never” thing, but it’s highly unlikely that the Heartbreak Kid will step into the ring for even one more match.
It would still be a good idea for WWE to bring in HBK for the Royal Rumble, though, as it just makes sense. No matter when he is set to appear, the fans love it and are thrilled to see him, but him being from San Antonio makes it even better.
Now, The Undertaker could possibly end up having a bigger role at the Royal Rumble if WWE books him for it.
Back in mid-November, the 900th episode of SmackDown Live saw The Undertaker return to TV and say that WrestleMania would no longer define him. That means he could very well show up on a weekly TV show or even at a PPV like the Royal Rumble, and he’s a Texas guy too.
The last time The Undertaker wrestled at the Royal Rumble PPV was in 2010 when he defeated Rey Mysterio to retain the World Title. His last time in the battle royal was at the 2009 Royal Rumble, and in 2007, he won the match after entering at number 30.
Goldberg and Brock Lesnar entering the Royal Rumble in 2017 are big enough by themselves, but hometown fans love to see hometown talent. Jim Ross knows that having Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker appear at the event in January could be huge for WWE, and it would make a lot of sense for them to be there. While HBK likely won’t ever wrestle again, it is not totally out of the question for The Deadman to be there and maybe even enter the giant battle royal.
