The countdown to NBC’s musical event Hairspray Live! has officially begun. It’s Dec. 7, 2016, and at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT, Hairspray Live! will premiere, taking over NBC’s programming until 11 p.m. There are multiple ways to watch the greatly anticipated show including streaming online, on TV, on demand, through various mobile apps and apps designed for smart TVs. The ability to watch at home or on the go ensures that more people can watch the star-studded musical and not miss one moment of the excitement. Hairspray Live! is a musical based on the 1988 film by John Waters. It has been performed on Broadway, remade as a movie and performed in musical theaters across the country. There are high expectations that tonight’s live performance will be one of the best interpretations of the beloved classic that breaks down racial barriers and addresses fat shaming issues.

NBC went with newcomer Maddie Baillio in the lead role of Tracy Turnblad. The character Tracy Turnblad is overweight, yet she exhibits tremendous self-confidence. She wants to dance on the Corny Collins Show (Corny Collins is played by Derek Hough) and is overjoyed when her dream comes true. Tracy’s mother Edna (played by Harvey Fierstein) encourages her to use her new platform to help bridge racial divides. The musical is set in the segregated sixties.

Hairspray focuses on many cultural and social issues. As Tracy Turnblad shows self-love and is a role model for those who face fat shaming, the desegregation theme in Hairspray speaks to social justice. The role of Edna Turnblad has always been played by a man and this silently speaks to homophobia. Divine originate the role of Edna Turnblad in the 1988 Hughes movie. Harvey Fierstein developed and starred in the role for Broadway. Many on social media have shared their excitement regarding Fierstein playing Edna in the live musical. NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt released a statement regarding the award-winning musical’s debut.

“In keeping with our desire to bring the best of Broadway to our live musicals, we’ve assembled the Broadway dream team of Tony Award winners for Hairspray Live. We’re thrilled to have director Kenny Leon, who knocked ‘The Wiz Live’ way out of the park, and Jerry Mitchell, the original choreographer of ‘Hairspray’ and who is the director of two smash hit musicals running on Broadway right now.

“We also have one of the most celebrated Broadway hyphenates, Harvey Fierstein, back writing the adaptation for TV. No one knows ‘Hairspray’ better than him since he played the role of Edna Turnblad more than a thousand times and won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Along with our incredible producing team of Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, and arguably the best songwriting team in musicals, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, ‘Hairspray Live’ is in the best possible hands.”

There is great excitement regarding the all-star cast who will perform in tonight’s musical. Ariana Grande plays Penny Pingleton and Jennifer Hudson portrays Motormouth Maybelle. Kristen Chenoweth and Dove Cameron team up again to portray mother and daughter Velma and Amber Von Tussle.

Tonight’s Hairspray Live! will be available to watch in a variety of ways. First, you may watch Hairspray Live! streaming online through the NBC Live site. Those who want to watch through mobile apps will find NBC apps for iOS, Apple, and Android devices that you may download for free here. Hairspray Live! will air on NBC, check your local listings for time and channel. Those who have a Hulu subscription will be able to watch Hairspray Live! on demand beginning Dec. 8, 2016.
