NFL News: Jeff Fisher, Aldon Smith and Oakland Raiders Have Uncertain Futures

NFL News is heating up as Week 13 action is set to begin.

The Rams officially extended their head coach, but he still needs to find ways to win before the end of next season.

Meanwhile, the Raiders are uncertain about their edge rusher returning this season. Oakland is also facing NFL opposition for their potential relocation to Las Vegas.

Here is the latest news surrounding the L.A. Rams and Oakland Raiders.

Jeff Fisher

L.A. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher agreed to a two-year extension, per multiple sources. Fisher is 4-7 in the Rams’ first season since relocating to Los Angeles.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Fisher had already agreed to the contract extension before the season began. Fisher officially signed the extension during the season, and it is now confirmed.

According to Bleacher Report,Rams general manager Les Snead also signed an extension. Snead and Fisher could have become free agents after their deals expired at the end of this season.

Nonetheless, NFL insider Adam Schefter said that the extension does not give Fisher any more job security. The Rams head coach still needs a strong finish to the season.

Added, some expect that Fisher’s new contract features a team-option after one season. Per Pro Football Talk,2017 could be an up-or-out season for Fisher.

Meaning, next season is the only guarantee for the Fisher. L.A.’s coach is approaching Dan Reeves’ spot as the coach with the most all-time losses.

Therefore, Fisher must win next season. He probably needs to win this year too. Otherwise, the Rams could change coaches sooner or later.

It should also be noted that Fisher’s agent is the father of Kevin Demoff, the Rams senior executive. Hence, this could have played a role in the negotiations.

Aldon Smith

NFL news surrounding the suspension of Oakland Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith also surfaced on Sunday. The Raiders are not counting on getting Smith back this season, according to Rapoport.

With only a month left in the season, it seems unlikely that Smith would return, per Rapoport.

The team sees Smith’s return from suspension as a bonus, according to NFL.com. However, the timing makes it difficult to count on Smith’s return to the team in 2016.

Smith was suspended a year for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances abuses. He became eligible for reinstatement once he completed his year ban a few weeks ago.

Smith has done all his meeting and he extended rehab 60 more days, according to Rapoport.

He is waiting for a meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Currently, no meeting is scheduled regarding Smith’s potential reinstatement.

Smith, 27, is in the first year of a two-year, $11.5 million deal that was signed during this offseason. Smith registered 3.5 sacks in nine games during his first season in Oakland.

He would be a welcomed addition to a Raiders defense that ranks No. 29 in yards per game for this season.

Oakland Raiders

The Raiders are also making NFL news thanks to their quest for a new stadium.

The NFL continues to show support for the Raiders staying in Oakland, despite Raiders owner Mark Davis showing consistent interest in relocating his team to Las Vegas.

According to CBS Sports insider Jason La Canfora, Davis will face opposition towards his plans to move the franchise to Las Vegas. There is a feeling that Oakland is the superior market to Las Vegas, despite Oakland not having a deal for a stadium that rivals the one in Nevada.

La Canfora reports the NFL could slow play the move to Las Vegas by adding to the relocation fee that Davis would pay to move the Raiders. The NFL also has leverage with G4 stadium funding money, which is a program devised for teams wanting assistance to replace their existing facilities in their current market.

NFL owners like Jerry Jones and Bob Kraft support the Vegas move, but more traditional owners like Jerry Richardson are less inclined to have the Raiders in Vegas. Therefore, La Canfora wrote that these stadium issues can create factions between the NFL owners.

Added, Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole said at least two of 15 owners on the NFL’s finance and stadium committees question the logic of leaving Oakland for Las Vegas.
