Kathy Griffin Goes After ‘Mean’ Ellen Degeneres, ‘Entitled’ Jon Hamm, And Kim Kardashian In Jaw-Dropping Memoir
Kathy Griffin’s new memoir dropped some major bombs on the celebrity world. The comedian’s book, Kathy Griffin’s Celebrity Run-Ins: My A-Z Index, dished on everything from Ellen DeGeneres’ mean tactics on her show to living next door to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. How did everyone react to Griffin’s jaw-dropping memoir?
According to Perez Hilton, Griffin wrote about a bad experience during a daytime talk show. She didn’t name the host in the book, but it was fairly obvious that she was talking about DeGeneres.
“I’m almost positive a certain beloved daytime talk show host once had me kicked out of a backstage dressing room at the Emmy Awards. I can’t prove it, but this person, who has short blonde hair, has a mean streak that all of Hollywood knows about,” she wrote.
Griffin later clarified her statement in the book and confirmed her longstanding feud with DeGeneres. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2007, Griffin claims, “Ellen did a monologue about how mean I am. I was in the dressing room like, ‘S**t! You’re another woman comic, c’mon!”
She also called out DeGeneres for being “very mean” in a later interview. The comedian now believes that DeGeneres doesn’t understand her jokes and wishes that women in the profession would support one another.
“I don’t know if Ellen gets that when I talk about women, I’m joking. I just feel really strongly about women supporting each other, especially women over 50 and women in comedy, because the people who still make decisions are still middle-aged white guys. We have to be better at not turning on each other,” she shared.
Of course, Griffin concluded that she still has “immense respect” for everything DeGeneres has accomplished in her career. She regrets, however, the fact that many women comedians don’t help each other out like their male counterparts.
Apart from bashing DeGeneres, Griffin sat down with ABC News and dished on a celebrity dinner she attended where Jon Hamm got “very drunk.” The dinner was held at Sue Menger’s house and featured some top name celebrities, including Jack Nicholson.
Hamm was coming from the set of Mad Men when Griffin claims “He proceed to get very drunk during the coffee table portion, and the when it came for dinner, Sue had sat him next to me.”
Griffin was talking to Nicholson when Hamm interrupted with incoherent ramblings. “First it was, ‘You know your Emmy isn’t a real Emmy,” Griffin recalled Hamm telling her. “I let that one go, but then he whispered, ‘You’re so o-o-o-old.”
Kathy Griffin didn’t let the comment slide and fired back, “You can’t keep up. You’re outclassed. Now zip it; Jack’s talking!”
The comedian has a history of run-ins with Hamm that predate his days on AMC’s hit show. “He’s one of these hot guys who’s mildly funny but actually thinks he’s comedian level funny,” she wrote. “You know the type — there’s probably one in your office or family. He just reeks of that. It’s an entitled air. When Hammy wants to be funny, he’s, well, not.”
Speaking of dinner parties, Griffin also discussed an interesting encounter with Woody Allen in 2014. According to Huffington Post, the acclaimed director was embroiled in controversy after his Dylan Farrow, his adopted daughter, accused him of sexual abuse. For Griffin, sitting next to Allen was an extremely uncomfortable experience.
“I’m seated next to Woody Allen and I’m uncomfortable because I think he’s guilty,” she admitted.
The situation got even weirder when Griffin steered the conversation to Miley Cyrus. “I’ve never missed ‘Hannah Montana,'” Allen told her. “I don’t know, that girl, she just had something.”
On a lighter note, ET Online reports that Griffin also opened up about what it’s like living next door to Kim Kardashian. Despite all the controversy Kanye West has created in recent months, Griffin revealed that Kim is a great neighbor.
“We live next door to each other,” she stated. “She’s doing fine. The last thing Kim Kardashian actually said to me was — because I warned her, ‘Just so you know, we might get along but you’re never out of the act’ — and she’s just like, ‘I get it. It’s an honor.’ I was like, ‘Good girl.'”
At the same time, Griffin also dished on which celebrities can actually take a joke. Her favorites to joke around with include Cyrus and Leonardo DiCaprio.
“I was presenting at the Directors Guild of America, but Leo made the mistake of just scrolling on the Twitter,” Griffin explained. “Basically, I lovingly tortured Leonardo DiCaprio. I believe I called him a man whore from the stage… That’s when I fell in love with him. I love a hot guy who can take a joke.”
As far as Cyrus is concerned, the singer just needed a little reassurance that Griffin’s jabs were only jokes.
“She goes, ‘So this whole time you’ve just been kidding?” Griffin stated. “And I go, ‘Yeah, this whole time, babe. I’m just a comic. I’m just kidding.’ We’ve been cool ever since.”
