Fans have been longing for more of Sons of Anarchy ever since the series concluded in 2014. After months of rumors, FX has finally confirmed Kurt Sutter’s SOA spin-off, Mayans MC . With the focus shifting to SAMCRO’s rival, do you want to see Charlie Hunnam return as Jax Teller ?
Comic Book reports that Sutter is producing the spin-off and hired Elgin James to work as the showrunner. Mayans MC will focus on the Latino biker club as they balance strong family values with illegal business. It still isn’t known when the series will take place or which Sons of Anarchy stars will have cameos.
It was initially thought that Mayans MC would be a prequel to the events in the original series. Emilio Rivera, however, shattered this theory when he confirmed his involvement in the project. Rivera played the president of the Mayans, Marcus Alvarez, on SOA . If the spin-off is a prequel, then Rivera would need to go back 25 years to play a younger version of himself.
That being said, Aces Show Biz is reporting that Rivera has since backtracked on the statement confirming his part on Mayans MC . The actor clarified earlier remarks by telling fans on Twitter , “No, I’m not sure if I’m even on the Mayans yet. Talking about it.”
He also assured fans that FX contacted him about the new role, but an official contract has not been signed. This doesn’t mean that Rivera will not reprise his role on the new show, but it does cast some doubt on Sutter’s plans.
According to Celeb Dirty Laundry , Sutter hasn’t revealed much about the spin-off. Other than hiring James, the SOA creator teased fans that Mayans MC will be darker and more violent than the original.
“Darker, a deep-rooted family drama that will showcase the Latino voice,” Sutter previously shared.
Speaking of a Latino voice, Comic Book revealed that James has an interesting history that makes him a perfect fit for Sutter’s vision. Before directing films like Little Birds , James was involved in several outlaw gangs in Boston. After growing up in the streets, and spending time behind bars, James turned his life around and became a director.
Of course, the biggest question surrounding the spin-off is whether or not fans will see Hunnam riding his Dyna again. The actor, who is currently busy building a career on the big screens, admitted that he’s willing to reprise his role as Jax, but isn’t sure how Sutter could fit him in.
Jax died at the end of the Season 7 finale. Apart from a flashback or the spin-off starting before the events in Sons of Anarchy , a cameo from Hunnam seems unlikely. Until more information is released, fans can always hold out hope that Hunnam will be back.
In the meantime, Sutter might be making some major changes behind the scenes. According to Cinema Blend , Sutter released a statement after the presidential elections and admitted that he wants to focus on more positive elements of his craft. Does this mean Sutter is revising his original plans for Mayans MC ?
“My point is this. I love being a misanthrope. My default is always anger and aggression. I feel empowered when I eviscerate the things that I don’t like,” Sutter explained. “Or more accurately, the things that scare me. But I know to dump hate and fear on top of this precarious political climate makes me part of the problem.”
He continued: “So for my own sanity and in the spirit of hope for my kids and all citizens of the world, I promise to look for the similarities rather than the differences. And instead of complaining about beliefs and policies I don’t think are right, I will try to put that energy into something productive that incites change rather than derisiveness.”
