Gigi Hadid Apologizes For Melania Trump Impression At AMA
Gigi Hadid has apologized for performing an impression of Melania Trump while she was hosting the American Music Awards on Sunday.
Gigi posted a handwritten apology through which she apologized to anyone who might have taken offense due to her impression of the soon-to-be first lady. The model co-hosted the AMAs together with Jay Pharoah of Saturday Night Live. The two kicked off the event with hilarious jokes about President-elect Donald Trump as soon as they were on the AMA stage. Gigi did an impression of Trump’s wife, Melania Trump, referring to that one time Melania Trump gave a speech that was uncannily similar to a previous speech given by First Lady Michelle Obama. Melania gave the speech at the Republican National Convention.
“I love my husband, President Barack Obama, and our children, Sasha and Malia,” joked Hadid.
Hadid’s impression received a lot of criticism on social media with some of the critics accusing her of bullying and racism. Gigi responded to the criticism by posting a handwritten apology through which she maintains that she did not have any malicious intent and was simply making a joke. She wrote the apology to explain that she was simply taking advantage of the opportunity to have a bit of fun. Nevertheless, she apologized to those who felt that she had taken it too far.
“I too have been the center of a nationally televised comedy skit that poked fun at my actions and was able to find the humor in it. I believe Melania understands show business and the way shows are written and run. I apologize to anyone that I offended and have only the best wishes for our country. Respectfully, Gigi,” explained Gigi on Twitter.
Hadid claims that she tried her best to eliminate any scripted content that she thought would have been too offensive. She also maintains the jokes were purely done for showbiz humor. The young model also added a vote of thanks to the writers and pointed out that she was honored to host the AMAs. Both Hadid and Pharoah did a great job hosting the event and keeping the crowd entertained. The two could not help but make some jokes about the recent U.S presidential elections which Donald Trump emerged the winner.

The two hosts were not the only ones that took advantage of the moment to joke about the elections. Model, writer and wife to John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, also had a few comedy-filled opinions of her own about the presidential elections. AMA co-host Pharoah also threw in a few jokes referring to things that Trump said during his presidential campaign. However, Pharoah did not issue any apology. It is clear that people have different opinions about the impressions made at the AMAs. Some took offense while others appreciated the dose of humor with the understanding that it is just showbiz.
People often take to social media to express their opinions on such matters. Gigi is also aware that not everyone appreciated her impression and it is impossible to please everyone. This is perhaps why she issued the apology. Perhaps, she did not want to offend her fans. Gigi is one of the most successful models of her generation, and her career has been rapidly rising since she officially took to the runway. Her quick rise to fame and recognition has given her privileges such as hosting the AMAs. She clearly does not want to risk jeopardizing her career, thus the apology.
Gigi’s humble apology for impersonating Melania Trump was her way of showing her social media followers that she does not want to cause any beef or alienate her followers.
