‘TWD’ Season 7: How Jesus And Carl’s Joint Mission To See Negan Is Different In ‘The Walking Dead’ Comics
Episode 5 of AMC’s The Walking Dead saw the return of the Hilltop colony and fan favorite, Paul “Jesus” Rovia. But how will this character affect future episodes of TWD and Negan’s group now he has stowed away in one of the Saviors trucks?
Spoiler alert: This article discusses Season 7 of AMC’s The Walking Dead as well as the comics the television series TWD is based on. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.
In Episode 5 of The Walking Dead, viewers saw Jesus (Tom Payne) decide to go on a super secret mission to find out where Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) lives. When he stowed away in one of the Saviors trucks at the end of the episode, he discovered Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) was also on a mission of his own involving Negan.
So what will happen in upcoming episodes of TWD now that Jesus and Carl are headed into enemy territory together?
According to the comic books TWD is based on, Jesus certainly did try to find Negan’s home. And Carl also headed out on a mission to locate Negan, according to IGN. However, in the Walking Dead comics, these characters set out at roughly the same time, yet individually. As IGN points out, the fact these two characters are heading to Negan’s together could have some interesting consequences in the television version of TWD.
In the comic book version of TWD, Jesus didn’t know Carl was there at the same time as himself. So, having the duo together aware of each other could mean they have each other’s backs. It could also lead to changes from TWD comic book storylines involving what they will do once they are there. Jesus and Carl both have separate objectives at the moment in relation to Negan. However, once they are there, those objectives may change depending on what happens. Added into the mix is the fact Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) is also present at Negan’s. That makes it three characters from outside the Saviors group there at the same time. Could Jesus and Carl meet up with Daryl, or alert Daryl to the fact they are there? If so, could this give Daryl enough incentive to fight back against Negan?
Viewers also got to see some character development in relation to Jesus in Episode 5 of TWD. It was discovered Jesus didn’t consider himself a leader and that is why he has never contested Gregory’s (Xander Berkeley) rule at Hilltop. So, will this opinion of himself affect what happens with Carl and Jesus in upcoming episodes of TWD? Or, alternatively, will what happens to Jesus and Carl once they get to Negan’s colony alter what Jesus thinks about himself and leadership. Only by tuning into future episodes of The Walking Dead will reveal all of the answers.
While Jesus’ mission is a reconnaissance mission, Carl is planning to kill Negan when he finds him. So, could this actually happen? Especially if he has Jesus as back up?
As Romper points out, AMC did a massive lead up to the introduction of Negan in Season 6 of TWD. So it seems highly unlikely Carl and Jesus will walk into Negan’s territory and take him out when Season 7 has only really just begun. Also, in the comics TWD is based on, Negan is still alive. So is Carl for that matter. But, Carl and Negan develop an strange relationship over the years Negan is on the scene and terrorizing all the other groups in The Walking Dead. So, it is likely viewers will not get to see Carl take out Negan just yet in TWD.
